    Visual Materials

A panoramic view of the Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena, with some kind of pre-game activities (possibly a band, or military group?) going on on the field. The horseshoe shaped stadium is mostly empty, with a crowd of people on the lower benches on the near side, an even smaller crowd on the far side on the right, and a block of people in white on the far side on the left. There are three rows of uniformed people standing along the far sideline of the field, and two groups of military men in the near left corner. A line of automobiles is parked in the far left corner of the stadium. There is a podium hung with bunting on the right side of the field, with a tall empty flagpole even farther to the right. There is a large hand-operated scoreboard on the far right, at the open end of the stadium. Very faint writing in white in the upper right corner reads "228B".

There are three rows of people in light uniforms standing at about the middle of the field, with a row of soldiers on the right, and a group of people dressed in white at the far left end of the field. A line of automobiles is on the far right side of the stadium, passing a podium hung with bunting in the center of the field. The American flag is starting to be raised on the tall flagpole on the far right, and everyone in the stands and on the field is standing and facing it. Rose Bowl Game, United States Naval Academy and University of Washington, Rose Bowl Stadium, Pasadena. January 1, 1924

    Visual Materials

A slightly elevated panoramic view of the 1924 Rose Bowl Game between the United States Naval Academy and the University of Washington at the Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena. The image is taken from the open end of the stadium (which was, at that time, horseshoe shaped), facing the field and the stands. There are five marines standing next to the base of the very tall flagpole in the center of the image, and dozens of sailors seated or standing along the near right edge of the field. The stands are mostly filled on the sides, but the far end is sparsely seated. The game is in progress, with most of the players on the field blurred due to motion. The stadium fence is visible on the far right, and there are a few people standing on the hill beyond it. There are a few automobiles parked inside the stadium at the near end of the field. Writing in white to the left of center reads "Photo No. 476 ; The Aerograph Co. ; 5880 Moneta ; Los Angeles, Calif."
