    Twelve items. Nine pieces of correspondence between Otis Chandler and Richard Nixon. Also included is a five page copy of the endorsement of Richard Nixon for President, and a memo from an unknown author and a photocopy of one of the letters. The memo is attached to a copy of an article entitled "Hazards of Presidential Isolation," which discusses Nixon. The last item is actually a letter address to "Buff" [Dorothy Chandler] from Richard Nixon, thanking her for selecting his secretary, Rose Mary Woods, as one of the Women of the Year award recipients.

Among the later: article copy, Frontier (mag), 4/1962, "The Crisis Nixon forgot...what the memorist didn't remember about the strings he pulled for Ike while pledged to Warren" ; 4-pp. (pp. 140-143) copied from The Palace Guard, by Dan Rather & Gary Paul Gate; Collection of copies of LAT news stories and editorials from the 1956 - 1958 time frame. Also two similar items from (Los Angeles) Mirror News, 12/4/1958.

    Approx. 40 items: LAT news stories, columns and editorials about the activities of Richard Nixon in 1945 through 1950. There is also one clip, dated 3/28/1929, "Whittier picks best orators...Richard Nixon wins first in elimination," which opens: "In the local finals of the National Oratorical Contest at Whittier Union High School Richard Nixon, 16 years of age, a junior, won first place in a field of eighteen."

    Much autograph material by Nixon, some news clippings, and primarily, correspondence between Nixon and Bassett, who were close friends. Correspondence also includes letters from RMN's secretary, signed photos of Nixon, map of a route he took during a worldwide trip, etc. Much of it dates to his time as a Congressman and Vice-President. Considerable discussion of changes needed in Republican party, issues related to international travel and journalism. There are a number of memos and letters from Nixon during the 1960 presidential campaign, outlining strategy, and commenting on prominent persons or situations of that time. There are letters from Henry Cabot Lodge (sent with related strategy material), to Billy Graham, and to Bassett asking for advice on how to express the "opposition party viewpoint" during a 1961 speaking tour. Richard Nixon letter dated December 28, 1954 removed from Autograph File and returned to Bassett files.

    Approx. 75 items: LAT news stories and other material on ex-Vice President Richard Nixon in the 1963 - 1964 time frame. Also in this folder are several LAT editorials and columns on Nixon from 1974 [?] including the editorial published 8/7/1974, "The President should resign," in which LAT wrote: "We ourselves especially feel the betrayal of Mr. Nixon. This newspaper has supported him...through a political career (and) more often cheered than criticized. As recently as 1972 we supported his bid for reelection....(We) must now conclude that he is at the end of the political road." Also tear sheets of article, Historical Society of Southern California (Quarterly), date unknown, " 'Rabbits and radicals' - Richard Nixon's 1946 campaign against Jerry Voorhis" ; LAT news stories about Nixon as well as copies of the columns he wrote for the newspaper during 1961, commenting on national and international affairs in his capacity as ex-Vice President of the United States. Also included are a smaller number of in-house memos related to columnist Nixon.
