    Includes a 1956 booklet titled, "The Second Man," (a critical look at Richard Nixon) published by Americans for Democratic Action, memos (one angry one to Bassett about photogs), news releases, a sheet of campaign song lyrics provided by Womanpower for Eisenhower, telegrams, a small campaign poster, invitation cards for the 1957 Inaugural, several Republican National Committee booklets related to the 1956 campaign, a New Yorker article of 10/13/56, an entire issue of Time (news magazine) for 11/12/1956, the election issue, with the cover story "The Winners." A red binder contains "1956 Nixon Campaign Diary of James Bassett--Aug. 31 - Sept. 24." Large file.

    Correspondence - Nixon, Richard

    Much autograph material by Nixon, some news clippings, and primarily, correspondence between Nixon and Bassett, who were close friends. Correspondence also includes letters from RMN's secretary, signed photos of Nixon, map of a route he took during a worldwide trip, etc. Much of it dates to his time as a Congressman and Vice-President. Considerable discussion of changes needed in Republican party, issues related to international travel and journalism. There are a number of memos and letters from Nixon during the 1960 presidential campaign, outlining strategy, and commenting on prominent persons or situations of that time. There are letters from Henry Cabot Lodge (sent with related strategy material), to Billy Graham, and to Bassett asking for advice on how to express the "opposition party viewpoint" during a 1961 speaking tour. Richard Nixon letter dated December 28, 1954 removed from Autograph File and returned to Bassett files.

    Approx. 100+ items: LAT editorials and news stories plus transcripts of broadcast media related to Nixon's activities in 1959. Some look at his chances for the presidency in 1960, others at those situations that might thrust him into the presidency (the death of Eisenhower while in office) ; LAT news stories, editorials, profiles and other material on Nixon during the presidential campaign year of 1960, and a smaller number of in-house memos ; LAT news stories about Nixon as well as copies of the columns he wrote for the newspaper during 1961, commenting on national and international affairs in his capacity as ex-Vice President of the United States. Also included are a smaller number of in-house memos related to columnist Nixon.
