    Approx. 30 items. Subjects include: internal memos discussing Yorty and his relationship with LAT; discussion of Yorty's affinity for news anchor George Putnam; colorful marginal notes about Yorty by Otis C. and others; 1963 invitation for W. to attend Yorty birthday party at Hollywood Palladium and W.'s regrets; Yorty claims that LAT material was "purposely one-sided," etc. Otis C. wrote marginal notes critical of Yorty. In red pencil he wrote on an August 1963 Mayoral letter --"A real kook with impossible emotions," and "[Yorty is] always looking for someone to give him sympathy."

    Approx. 30 items. Letters, booklet, "The Yorty Years," a highly favorable view of his mayorship, transcripts of media reports on Yorty, sections from L.A. Free Press and Herald-Examiner, etc. Specific subjects include: LAT hesitates to endorse Tom Bradley in mayoral race of 1969, instead endorsing Alfonzo Bell as the most likely to unseat Yorty; Yorty's office newsletter (3/13/1969) reports on Yorty's speech to the Westwood Young Republicans; Yorty newsletter predicting mass police resignations should Bradley win election; George Putnam newscast highly critical of Otis Chandler and LAT; much more material relating to Yorty-LAT feud; etc.

    Approx. 75 items. Transcripts of press conferences and other public gatherings, news summaries from Yorty's office, news clippings, letters. Subjects include: Yorty refers to Otis Chandler and L.A.'s District Attorney as "practically in a conspiracy to get (me)" - Radio-TV Reports, 10/15/1968; Yorty's forays into international affairs; Yorty says he may sue LAT over an editorial cartoon; much more of the same in the Yorty-LAT face off; several letters from Yorty to LAT foreign correspondent William Tuohy; Yorty files a $2 million libel suit against LAT (12/1968); copy of the libel suit Yorty filed with County Superior Court; Yorty accuses LAT of protecting "friends" and "harpooning" their "enemies"; Yorty sponsors creation of his own editorial cartoons criticizing Otis Chandler & LAT; etc.

    Bradley endorsement protests

    Approx. 25 items: a collection of angry letters in response to LAT's endorsement of Tom Bradley over Sam Yorty for Los Angeles mayor and attached standard response letters reading, in part, "I am sure you give us credit for making our political endorsements on the basis... of what we believe is the best interest of this city, this State and this nation," and closing with the observation that LAT knows some voters will always be displeased with any endorsement.

    Yorty, Sam - 1961 Mayoral Campaign

    3 items. One multi-page copy of Yorty-George Putnam interview broadcast on May 26, 1961. Putnam refers to it as a "half-hour interrogation"--it is more like a Yorty campaign ad. Also two very similar broadcast texts from May 30,1061, which Putnam opens by stating: "tonight you will hear the facts about Sam Yorty and why he deserves your support and vote on Wednesday."

Subjects include: Otis Chandler publicly remarking that Yorty had failed to show leadership in race relations, after which Yorty challenged C. to a debate on who was doing the most to improve race relations in L.A.; Yorty, LAT and Vietnam issues; repeated allegations by Yorty of LAT "distortions"; complete transcript of Yorty press conference of 6/9/1966; text of Yorty speech to AP Managing Editors Assn., 11/18/1966; etc.
