The material includes letters written to Sir Leoline Jenkins and his secretary, Dr. Owen Wynne, as well as newsletters (in English and French) written from various continental countries concerning the Scanian War, the Elector of Brandenburg, the Ottoman Turks and the Dutch War. Another significant group of material includes extracts from the Journals of both Houses of Parliament dealing primarily with the Popish Plot, Catholics, Titus Oates and the Exclusion Crisis. The original roan-backed Middle Hill boards, with the label MS. 12256, from the collection of Thomas Phillipps are in Box 6. The decision was made to modernize and standardize the spelling of countries, cities and place names on the folders and in the Finding Aid; this was done in order to facilitate electronic searching of the Finding Aid. The material in this collection was written from the continent and England resulting in a variety of dating styles and calendars; the decision was made to use the date provided by each author without any attempt on the part of the cataloger to establish whether the date was Old or New style. The Huntington Library also has Francis Benson newsletters to Sir Leoline Jenkins, 1676-1679 (HM 30314-30315).
