Description: A memory book kept by Helen Kern Grills during her trip west with her family beginning in May 1925 from her home in McKeesport, Pennsylvania to the West Coast, and ending back in Marion, Ohio. The album has a combination of 291 labeled photos and post cards and 45 typed pages of a diary of her trip. Also included are a Band program dated June 5, 1925 from Long Beach, CA; a movie house program dated June 20, 1925 from Long Beach, CA; a map of southern California; the June 25, 1925 Mount Lowe Daily News along with the history of Mt. Lowe Railway. There is a San Diego and Coronado Ferry Ticket and brochure on Yosemite National Park; a map of Yellowstone National Park and three Yellowstone National Park geyser schedules. There are also a substantial number of photographs and descriptions of Missions in California as well as Long Beach, California. The roughly three month trip was accomplished through the use of trains, cars, boats, horses and buses.

Helen Wills letter to Sherman Day Thacher

In this letter written on a postcard, Helen Wills acknowledges the letter Thacher sent her and regrets that she will not be able to visit Ojai this year due to a long trip abroad. She is delighted to hear about the new asphalt courts and hopes she can play on them some day. Card is postmarked: Berkeley, Calif., 11:30 PM, Nov. 28, 1925.

Idethia Nylyes diary

This volume contains 99 pages of text handwritten in pencil, describing a transcontinental trip by rail from Massachusetts to California and back in the spring of 1887. Idethia Nylyes traveled with her parents and various other individuals as part of a Raymond-Whitcomb package excursion, with stopovers in settings such as Pasadena, California, Yosemite National Park, and Yellowstone National Park. Descriptions of Yellowstone National Park occupy approximately one-quarter of the text. There is some writing throughout the book and at the end (about half of the volume is blank).

Hayden Geological Survey photograph album

Visual Materials

A photographic album with 78 "Albertype" prints of photographs taken by William Henry Jackson in the American West during the Hayden Geological Surveys in 1871 and 1872. Photographs show landscapes of rivers, Yellowstone Lake, mountains, and hot springs, mostly in Yellowstone National Park, in what is now Wyoming. The last 20 plates are labeled "Hot Spring Series", and show springs, fissures, craters, and cones in the Yellowstone area. The images are Albertype or collotype prints (a photomechanical printing process) produced from Jackson's photographs by Edward Bierstadt.
