The set consists of two diary volumes kept by Hallie Christie Miles from June 1907 until June 1909. The first volume, which ends in June 1908, was kept while Hallie was mainly living at home in Rock Creek, Kansas, and giving music lessons to students in nearby Hall's Summit, Long Creek, Rosemont, Agricola, and Long Creek. Most of the entries focus on the weather and Hallie's daily activities, such as sewing, household chores, reading, writing and receiving letters, attending church (including the Baptist, Presbyterian, and Methodist churches), and visiting friends and relatives. Hallie had friends with both horse and buggies and automobiles, and writes frequently of traveling in both (she also drove the horses herself, which on one occasion almost led to an accident when she "met an engine and nearly had a smashup"). She also takes local trips by train, including those to Hutchinson and Ottawa, Kansas, as well as a longer trip to Arlington, Colorado. In the second diary, which begins in September 1908, Hallie writes of her extended travels in the western United States, which lasted from October 1908 until March 1909. Hallie traveled by rail through Colorado to Boseman, Montana, and down through Butte. Her entries are usually austere, but she points out that this portion of the trip "afforded very beautiful scenery and the conductor was very kind to tell us interesting things along the way." She also records seeing "Indian wigwams and a cowboy girl" near Missoula and a wagon team crossing the Flat Head River. After an engine breakdown in the Cascades, Hallie arrived in Seattle, where she stayed at the Y.W.C.A. (her usually accommodations throughout her travels). She toured Washington state by car (finding time to attended the Tabernacle, Methodist Church, and Catholic Cathedral) and took a three-day boat trip to Vancouver, Canada. In January 1909 she traveled through Oregon and California, briefly stopping in San Francisco before taking the train to Los Angeles (along the way she describes railway tunnels, the Santa Clara Valley and Santa Clara College, and the Henry Miller cattle ranch). She spent the next month taking day trips in the Los Angeles area (including seeing construction on the Owens River Aqueduct). In February she began the return trip to Kansas, passing through Las Vegas, Salt Lake City, and Grand Junction, as well as taking a few days touring Pueblo, Colorado.

    Mrs. C. H. Ackerman diary

    Mrs. C. H. Ackerman wrote this diary of her travels from July to September 1886. She and her husband Neal took a trip starting from Susquehanna, PA to Wilkes-Barre, going on to Patterson, New Jersey, Pittsburgh, Columbus, Ohio, Indianapolis, St. Louis, Kansas City where they stayed at the Coates House, and then to Fort Leavenworth. From there, they traveled to Denver, Colorado Springs, Leadville, San Francisco, Yosemite, and Salt Lake City. The diary also covers their trip back east with numerous observations concerning mining towns, seeing many Chinese quarters in the larger towns, and noting the scenery. Mrs. C. H. Ackerman provided a faithful and candid description of her travels through the American West, covering both the elegant and refined to the arduous and exhausting to the awe-inspiring. With the diary is a letter by E. R. Payson to Mrs. Ackerman, 1890, February 17.

    Helen Kern Grills photograph album and diary

    A memory book kept by Helen Kern Grills during her trip west with her family beginning in May 1925 from her home in McKeesport, Pennsylvania to the West Coast, and ending back in Marion, Ohio. The album has a combination of 291 labeled photos and post cards and 45 typed pages of a diary of her trip. Also included are a Band program dated June 5, 1925 from Long Beach, CA; a movie house program dated June 20, 1925 from Long Beach, CA; a map of southern California; the June 25, 1925 Mount Lowe Daily News along with the history of Mt. Lowe Railway. There is a San Diego and Coronado Ferry Ticket and brochure on Yosemite National Park; a map of Yellowstone National Park and three Yellowstone National Park geyser schedules. There are also a substantial number of photographs and descriptions of Missions in California as well as Long Beach, California. The roughly three month trip was accomplished through the use of trains, cars, boats, horses and buses.

    Elizabeth P. Hincks diary

    Mrs. Hincks commenced her diary on June 12, 1868, upon advice of General E. R. S. Canby's wife who told her that she wished she had kept a diary during her travels as an army wife. The first portion of the diary recaps the events since the Hincks' wedding till June of 1868. The remainder covers the family's trip to New York, Boston, Cambridge, Bangor, and Buckport, Me., Col. Hinck's hometown, in the summer and late fall of 1868. Mrs. Hincks recounted her daily life -- reading, sewing, shopping, paying visits, attending theater and lectures in Boston and New York, (including an exhibit of Frederick Church's Niagara). There are also accounts of a Republican meeting and parade in Bangor that featured her husband along with Daniel Sickles and James Harrison Wilson as guests of honor, public appearances and speaking engagement of Edward W. Hincks who was campaigning for Benjamin F. Butler, and the election day of 1868 in Boston. The last portion of the diary, from the late November on, describe the return to Goldsboro, passing the battlefields of Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Petersburg, and the life in camp.

    Eleanor F. Bennett diaries

    The six diaries detail the years Bennett spent moving around Southern California while looking for employment; being a single woman, she found it difficult to find work other than working with children, which she enjoyed, but she longed to find a more rewarding job as a writer. She often talks about the hardships of being a single woman including her financial problems, her health problems, the challenges of the job search and her loneliness, as well as her social activities including going to plays and attending women's club meetings. Her various jobs took her to several southern California cities and her diaries include detailed descriptions of Long Beach, Los Angeles, Pasadena, San Diego and Santa Barbara. Being a writer, Bennett's diaries are well written and full of details regarding the following: Hull House (Chicago); the Southern California Woman's Press Club; the Young Women's Christian Association of California; her trip to Seattle to see the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition; her trip through the Canadian Rockies; and a visit to Chicago. Bennett illustrated her diaries with newspaper clippings and illustrations from magazines; a letter by Lily Frémont is pasted into one of the volumes. The scrapbook contains clippings of newspaper articles and announcements written by Bennett; these deal with social events and news in southern California

    West coast travel diary of a woman

    A western train trip diary of a young woman as she traveled from Chicago to the west coast in 1915. On the front page it is written "For Neva from Carrie." On the cover of the leather diaries, "My Travels" is lettered in gold gilt. The author traveled from Chicago to southern California with a stopover at the Grand Canyon, Los Angeles and San Diego where she celebrated her 32nd birthday. Then it was up the coast to Santa Cruz, San Francisco, Yosemite National Park, Oregon and Washington, and then it was over to Yellowstone National Park and back home to Salina, Kansas. There is a photo which accompanies the diary of a young woman in a hammock, which could be either Carrie or Neva. Also at the rear of the diary are a number of people listed with their addresses.
