Mrs. N. H. Dayton diary

Mrs. H. H. Dayton kept this diary while traveling with her husband, Nate, and Mr. and Mrs. Ben H. Van Levy in 1909. The diary begins in September 1909 with the couples leaving and traveling to Minneapolis, St. Paul, Banff, Winnipeg, Vancouver, Victoria, Seattle, Portland, and then south to California. Mrs. Dayton spends 12 pages describing her experiences in San Francisco: the aftermath of the 1906 earthquake; Golden Gate Park; Cliff House; Chinatown; as well as a visit to an opium den. The diary ends after the couples traveled back to the east coast, arriving home in October 1909. The diary also contains several lists: hotels; cities visited; railroads traveled; theaters attended; miles traveled; and states crossed. The names of the travelers are inside the front cover.

The travel diary documents Richard C. Backus' road trip from New York to Los Angeles with typewritten notes and labeled photographs. The diary includes details regarding their trip and the various people and places they visited along the way through Illinois, Kansas, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, and California. The typewritten notes include details about miles driven, car trouble and repairs (the group traveled in three vehicles), and road and weather conditions. The diary also includes a hand-drawn map of the group's driving route.

Elizabeth P. Hincks diary

Mrs. Hincks commenced her diary on June 12, 1868, upon advice of General E. R. S. Canby's wife who told her that she wished she had kept a diary during her travels as an army wife. The first portion of the diary recaps the events since the Hincks' wedding till June of 1868. The remainder covers the family's trip to New York, Boston, Cambridge, Bangor, and Buckport, Me., Col. Hinck's hometown, in the summer and late fall of 1868. Mrs. Hincks recounted her daily life -- reading, sewing, shopping, paying visits, attending theater and lectures in Boston and New York, (including an exhibit of Frederick Church's Niagara). There are also accounts of a Republican meeting and parade in Bangor that featured her husband along with Daniel Sickles and James Harrison Wilson as guests of honor, public appearances and speaking engagement of Edward W. Hincks who was campaigning for Benjamin F. Butler, and the election day of 1868 in Boston. The last portion of the diary, from the late November on, describe the return to Goldsboro, passing the battlefields of Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Petersburg, and the life in camp.

Daniel C. White diaries

Three diaries kept by Daniel C. White between 1854 and 1864. The first diary, dated 1854-1858, traces White's overland journey from Indiana to California with his friend William V. Rinehart. It includes descriptions of Pawnee and Sioux Indians, crossing the Platte River, and passing by Chimney Rock, Laramie Peak, Devils Gate, and Salt Lake City. It also records White's time mining in and around Sacramento and Marysville, California, and includes some accounting notes, various poetry or song lyrics, and a description of a "hell of a flogging" that White gave to a "Chinaman" who he caught stealing. The second diary is dated 1858-1859, and records White's travels and mining experiences between Sucker Creek, Oregon, and Crescent City, California, as well as some poems and notes. The final diary, dated August-October, 1864, was kept while White was serving with the Union Army in Georgia during the Civil War. It begins while he was near the Chattahoochee River , and he also spends a great deal of time near Owl Rock Church. The diary describes various military engagements and movements, including those near Atlanta. The diary ends when White had apparently been discharged and was near Louisville.
