The volume is Charlotte A. Babcock's reminiscences of her five years at sea (1851-1856) with her husband Captain David S. Babcock aboard the ships Swordfish and Young America. She gives detailed descriptions of San Francisco, Hawaii, Canton (Guangzhou), China, Hong Kong, Bombay, Manila, and Singapore. She also discusses the people she met, parties she attended, and the activities of the sailors and passengers on board her husband's ships. Henry Clark Rouse accompanied General Nelson A. Miles on a world tour setting out from San Francisco on October 1, 1902, and returning to New York, February 15, 1903. The album focuses on the military inspection and diplomatic tour of Hawaii, Guam, the Philippines, Japan, China, and concludes with the journey on the Trans-Siberian Railway. This privately printed work is illustrated lavishly with photographs taken on the trip. The photographs are particularly rich in depictions of daily life and military installations in the Philippines, where the party spent three weeks sailing between the islands and this section comprises the bulk of the photographic and textual content of the work. Photographs from China include locations in Hong Kong, Canton and Peking (Beijing) and the Great Wall. Two photographs of the aftermath of a public execution in the streets of Peking are also present.

Charles W.C. Senter letters

The nine letters, which Senter wrote to his friend "Miss Elizabeth," cover his time spent on board the USS Shenandoah and USS Oneida with the US Navy from 1865-1869. In those four years he was sent to Brazil, South Africa, India, Madagascar, Hong Kong, Thailand, Japan, and China. More specifically he talks in detail about his time in Rio de Janeiro, Simon's Town, Cape of Good Hope, Bombay, Tamatave, Bangkok, Yokohama-shi, Hyogo-ken, Hokkaido, and Ying Xian. His letters from Thailand discuss the funeral plans for King Pinklao; included with the letters is a copy of the "funeral circular" distributed by King Mongkut (the copy was handwritten by Senter).

Ogden's Guinea Gold photographic cigarette cards

A group of ten small photographs related to China and Japan that were issued as cigarette cards inside packets of Ogden's Guinea Gold cigarettes. Images depict: a group of Chinese Boxers; "Lin Ta Jen," a supporter of the Boxers; Chinese Christians; "A Mandarin and his family"; the Taku Forts in China; the Empress Dowager Cixi; Mutsuhito, Emperor of Japan; and the British Navy in Hong Kong harbor. The cards have printed captions.

The collection consists primarily of essays, notes and treatises by Robert Christie Cotton (b. 1885) on various topics written during his active army service and later as editor of the U.S. Infantry Journal. It includes articles and essays on the Philippines, China, Cuba, Puerto Rico, the Mexican border, and World War I, among other topics. Many of the documents are typewritten.
