Charles C. and Sarah D. Rich letters

Typescript of letters written by Charles C. Rich and his first wife Sarah D. (Pea) Rich from August 1, 1853, to January 11, 1863. Rich's letters are addressed to his wives, primarily his second wife Eliza A. (Graves) Rich. He writes from his missions in San Bernardino, California (August 1, 1853 and June 1, 1856) of hot weather, poor crops, and his intentions to leave when the "Lord wills." His letter from a mission in Liverpool, England (January 11, 1863) focuses on a Church conference held at Birmingham from January 1-6, 1863. Two other letters from Rich were written from Nottinghamshire, England (November 22, 1861) and South Wales (January 31, 1861). The majority of Rich's letters focus on instructions and well wishes for his wives and children. Also included is a letter from Sarah Rich to Eliza Rich, and a letter from Sarah to Charles Rich, sent from Salt Lake City and dated August 25, 1853. In it, Sarah writes of the death of their daughter Henrietta from scarlet fever, that the Indians are "at open war with us as a people" and had killed several Mormons at Parley's Canyon, her belief that "Old Bridger [James Bridger, 1804-1881] is at the head of all the war," and her fears about lack of money and supplies for the coming winter. Paige and to his aunt, Harriet Paige, written from Callao, Peru and describing his life in the navy, his hopes for the future, and his adventures on a hunting trip on a remote island near the equator.

Charles King letter to Amy Requa Long

Letter written while Charles King was at sea aboard the steamship Arizona in 1898. He writes of the pleasantness of the voyage, of Amy Long's husband Oscar Fitzalan Long, and of the Spanish-American War. Also included are a list of "Dramatis Personae" and a photograph of Charles King.

A collection of 44 items which consists primarily of correspondence by Charles King to fellow soldier George O. Eaton. In these letters, King reminisces about his time in the military and his involvement in the Indian Wars under General Crook. He writes about Buffalo Bill; George Crook; George Custer; Sitting Bull; Alfred Terry; the Shoshoni Indians; the Apache Indians; the Yavapai Indians; and the Wisconsin National Guard. There are also letters by George O. Eaton and Walter Scribner Schuyler, which are about their experiences in the U.S. military. The ephemera consists of photographs of George O. Eaton and William Henry Corbusier (a fellow soldier and addressee in the collection), two printed items and five newspaper clippings regarding Charles King's military career, George Custer and Buffalo Bill.

Charles Dana papers

The collection includes materials related to Charles Dana's time in Hawai'i, including a copy of Page, Bacon & Co.'s petition to establish a bank; correspondence describing scandals within the Hawaiian royal family and efforts to appoint Dana as American Commissioner to Hawaii; and 3 pages of notes from a lecture, evidently written by Dana, describing his attendance at a traditional Hawaiian lūʹau given by Prince Lot Kapuāiwa, later King Kamehameha V. Business correspondence is primarily from Dana's tenure as Vice President of the North American Steamship Company, with letters from New York shipbuilder William Henry Webb and other business contacts. There is also some personal correspondence from Dana's family and friends, including letters from Dana's father and brother discussing Abraham Lincoln's election and the political climate in the United States. Some family cartes-de-visite, checks and bonds, and a broadside advertising one of Dana's lectures are also included.
