Charles C. (Charles Coulson) Rich letter to Sarah D. Rich

Letter from Charles Rich in Little Salt Lake City to his wife Sarah D. Rich in Great Salt Lake City, Deseret. Rich writes that he has been ill but is recovering, describes his supplies and food, and asks Sarah to pay the taxes at home. He writes that he will send her something when he gets to the mines, gives instructions on building a storehouse, and implores Sarah to "take special care of the children." He also includes notes to his children telling them to behave properly.

Charles King letter to Amy Requa Long

Letter written while Charles King was at sea aboard the steamship Arizona in 1898. He writes of the pleasantness of the voyage, of Amy Long's husband Oscar Fitzalan Long, and of the Spanish-American War. Also included are a list of "Dramatis Personae" and a photograph of Charles King.

Charles C. and Sarah D. Rich letters

Typescript of letters written by Charles C. Rich and his first wife Sarah D. (Pea) Rich from August 1, 1853, to January 11, 1863. Rich's letters are addressed to his wives, primarily his second wife Eliza A. (Graves) Rich. He writes from his missions in San Bernardino, California (August 1, 1853 and June 1, 1856) of hot weather, poor crops, and his intentions to leave when the "Lord wills." His letter from a mission in Liverpool, England (January 11, 1863) focuses on a Church conference held at Birmingham from January 1-6, 1863. Two other letters from Rich were written from Nottinghamshire, England (November 22, 1861) and South Wales (January 31, 1861). The majority of Rich's letters focus on instructions and well wishes for his wives and children. Also included is a letter from Sarah Rich to Eliza Rich, and a letter from Sarah to Charles Rich, sent from Salt Lake City and dated August 25, 1853. In it, Sarah writes of the death of their daughter Henrietta from scarlet fever, that the Indians are "at open war with us as a people" and had killed several Mormons at Parley's Canyon, her belief that "Old Bridger [James Bridger, 1804-1881] is at the head of all the war," and her fears about lack of money and supplies for the coming winter. John Charles Frémont letter to "Mr. Wright,"

In this letter to the otherwise unidentified "Mr. Wright" of Washington, Frémont writes thata French company called "the Belgian Miners" has arrived in San Francisco, and are under lease to him. He shall put them to work immediately "on a good vein" and writes that "their report to France will be of great importance." During his time in the South, Frémont reports that he "obtained a great deal of information relative to mines." He has found another rich vein, but is not sure of the ore it contains - he has sent a piece to England for identification - and has acquired a large amount of land that may be of considerable value. Frémont states that they have no commissioner, but hopes the President will "send out others without delay." He hopes Mr. Wright will act on his behalf in this and other matters.

A collection of 44 items which consists primarily of correspondence by Charles King to fellow soldier George O. Eaton. In these letters, King reminisces about his time in the military and his involvement in the Indian Wars under General Crook. He writes about Buffalo Bill; George Crook; George Custer; Sitting Bull; Alfred Terry; the Shoshoni Indians; the Apache Indians; the Yavapai Indians; and the Wisconsin National Guard. There are also letters by George O. Eaton and Walter Scribner Schuyler, which are about their experiences in the U.S. military. The ephemera consists of photographs of George O. Eaton and William Henry Corbusier (a fellow soldier and addressee in the collection), two printed items and five newspaper clippings regarding Charles King's military career, George Custer and Buffalo Bill.
