Description: Collection of letters and report cards relating to M.R. Williams and education in Los Angeles County from 1888-1910. Includes a variety of letters of recommendation and letters of appointment for Williams to various posts in the Los Angeles County School District, including those to the Board of Education, as head of the El Lugo School District, and as principal of Compton Public Schools. The letters were written by representatives of the El Lugo School District, Office of the Board of Education, Monrovia Schools, Santa Monica Public Schools, and Pasadena Public Schools. Also included are six reports cards for Williams' son, Manley, from Compton and Monrovia (1901-1905), a report card for Jessie Williams (Monrovia, 1909-1910), and a letter from the Compton School Alumni Committee thanking Mr. and Mrs. Williams for their assistance in putting on a play.

C.C. Williams' Workingmen's Party of California and U.S. census materials

Manuscripts

Five documents and letters relating to C.C. Williams' activities with the Workingmen's Party of California, The Peoples Advocate, and the United States Census in San Francisco and Stockton, California. The collection includes a history of the Workingmen's Party of California (WPC), probably written by Williams, which references the Party's political activities, the "Chinese question," and the election of Dennis Kearney as Party president. It also includes a summary of charges from the WPC against Williams and W.E. Peyton accusing them of violating their pledge to the WPC and committing "acts unbecoming a member" by publishing the "Daily Three o'Clock" newspaper, which was "in the interests of the New Constitution Party" and against the WPC. Also included are a letter from Eliot Lord of the Department of the Interior, Census Office, authorizing C.C. Williams as an agent of the Tenth Census (1880), a sheet of Chinese characters used by Williams when he served as deputy assessor of San Francisco, and a memorandum of agreement for the establishment of "The Peoples Advocate" newspaper (1879).

The collection consists of correspondence, ephemera, photographs, essays, notes, research material, reports, school records, yearbooks, poems, short stories, and speeches. Although the majority of the collection was written by Leroy Jackson, there are several other authors contained in the collection including David Greene, William Hobart Hare, John Collier, John Johnson Enmegahbowh, Lynn J. Frazier, Joseph Alexander Gilfillan, Charles Lemon Hall, Samuel William Pond, W. Carson Ryan, Alfred L. Riggs, Thomas Lawrence Riggs, Jedediah Dwight Stevens, and Frederick Jackson Turner. The material covers the following subjects: early missions and missionaries to Native Americans in Minnesota, Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, and Wisconsin; Indian schools in Alaska and New Mexico; the Navajo; the Hopi; the public school and university in America and American education; progressive education; probation and the juvenile court.
