Horace F. (Horace Francis) Page letters to C.C. Williams
Manuscripts
Series of letters written from Horace F. Page to C.C. Williams between January 1881 and July 1882 in response to the latter's seeking of a presidential appointment for a consulship. Page writes repeatedly to Williams that he is doing all he can to secure Williams such a position, and urges him to come to Washington or continue to wait patiently for a position to become available. Page also offers Williams a place in the pension office, which Williams declined.

M.R. Williams education materials
Manuscripts
Collection of letters and report cards relating to M.R. Williams and education in Los Angeles County from 1888-1910. Includes a variety of letters of recommendation and letters of appointment for Williams to various posts in the Los Angeles County School District, including those to the Board of Education, as head of the El Lugo School District, and as principal of Compton Public Schools. The letters were written by representatives of the El Lugo School District, Office of the Board of Education, Monrovia Schools, Santa Monica Public Schools, and Pasadena Public Schools. Also included are six reports cards for Williams' son, Manley, from Compton and Monrovia (1901-1905), a report card for Jessie Williams (Monrovia, 1909-1910), and a letter from the Compton School Alumni Committee thanking Mr. and Mrs. Williams for their assistance in putting on a play.

Approx. 35 items: LAT news stories and editorials on the businessman and stock promoter C.C. Julian through the mid and late 1920s, ending with 1930. LAT "news" and editorials can both be described as anti-Julian. Also in the file is a 5-pp. segment from a Claremont College thesis submitted in 1929 by John Homer Williams, titled "Attitude toward C.C. Julian," which opens "The Times, one observes, gives special attention to those whom it dislikes. Care is taken to see that publicity given them is of an unfavorable character. C.C. Julian offers a case in point."

Legal documents in the People of the State of California vs. William Curlett
Manuscripts
Two of the documents concern a bribery charge against architect William Curlett in 1892. He was charged with trying to bribe members of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors to accept the bid of a certain furniture company to furnish a building he designed. The documents contain the testimony of several witnesses against Curlett.The third document is a signed contract between William J. Kennedy, athlete promoter, and boxer and actor Victor McLaglen (San Francisco, 1910).

The three items include: a 19-page letter by Cleveland to J. Ross Browne, US Minister to China, regarding the Chinese in California (1868, July 27); a 476-page handwritten manuscript entitled "The Chinese in California," written in 1868-1869; and a typed manuscript entitled "San Diego Sixty Years Ago" written circa 1929. Both the letter and manuscript regarding Chinese in California are about the history of Chinese immigration to California, their social and domestic lives, their religion, education, missionaries work with the Chinese, their role in the California Gold Rush and the building of railroads and the various California laws regarding Chinese immigrants and Chinese women. The manuscript about San Diego covers the history of San Diego after its settlement. Cleveland talks about "Old Town," San Diego founder Alonzo Horton, the city's development, the landscape of the area, and the native peoples in the vicinity.
