The journal volumes are arranged chronologically in three boxes: Box 1 Volumes 1-12 (1752-1789, Aug.) ; Box 2 Volumes 13-25 (Aug. 1789-1806) ; Box 3 Volumes 26-37 (1806-1828). The journals comprise thirty-seven volumes in white vellum covers, all in good condition. After 1778, at the end of each year, many of the volumes include lists of musical compositions and publications, major events, journeys, marriages, births and deaths. The majority of the volumes were written by John Marsh except the very end of volume 37 which was finished by his son Edward Garrard Marsh; also, the volumes contain the pencil edit markings and notes made by E.G. Marsh for his heavily edited early edition of the journals.

This volume contains lectures, mainly in Burrow's hand and given by Burrows to his pupils, however there are also some works by a few of his pupils. There is an index at the end of the volume which lists 26 different pieces. Some of the topics include: leprosy, physiognomy, ancient antiquities, etc. Some pages blank, mainly written on the rectos, some pages excised.

John Warly notebooks

Two manuscript volumes attributed to Reverend John Warly; included are biblical passages, sermon notes, and commentaries on spiritual matters and political subjects including the English Civil War. Entries are in secretary hand, primarily in English with a small amount of Greek. The volumes are signed by Lee Warly, a descendant of John Warly; both volumes are written in two directions with the text beginning at one cover then turned over and beginning again (tête-bêche style). The volumes have worn leather covers and fragile spines, HM 83773 is especially fragile with the spine mostly lacking and the pages loose; the volumes are housed in one box for preservation purposes.
