Description

The collection consists of documents and letters related to California land cases involving the law firm of Halleck, Peachy & Billings. The major part of the collection consists of legal documents written chiefly by Henry W. Halleck relating to the California land cases-copies of land titles, drafts of briefs, and opinions used in establishing the legal titles of some 36 different land grants. There are also notes on Spanish land laws and a few papers relating to other legal cases in California.

    This disbound album contains 33 pictorial photographs of California mission ruins taken by photographer Louis Fleckenstein around 1930, including Missions San Carlos Borromeo, San Francisco Solano, San Gabriel Arcangel, San Juan Capistrano, San Jose, La Purísima Concepción, San Luis Obispo, San Miguel Arcangel, Nuestra Señora de la Soledad, San Antonio de Pádua, San Buenaventura, San Fernando Rey, San Francisco de Asís, San Juan Bautista, San Luis Rey, Santa Barbara, Santa Clara, San Diego, and Santa Inés. Churches and missions that are also shown are Plaza Church (also known as the Church of Our Lady the Queen of the Angels), the Royal Presidio Chapel (also known as San Carlos Cathedral), and San Antonio de Pala Asistencia.     Bay Area and Southern California views

    Visual Materials

    The photographs consist of views within the counties of Los Angeles, Monterey, San Diego, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Santa Cruz, Ventura, and San Francisco. Specific locations along the coast capture images of Angel Island, Coronado Beach, Lake Tahoe, Monterey Bay, Point Loma, Port Harford (Port San Luis), San Francisco Bay, and Sausalito Bay. Also included are images of what appear to be an early Chinese community of fisherman mending fishing nets and drying squid along the coast of Monterey Bay, San Francisco's Warner's CobWeb Palace, Don Antonio de Coronel's rancho, Gaviota Pass, and the Stanford University Gates in Palo Alto. Several images are credited to I.N. Cook, the Rhea Bros., E.W. Turner, R.J. Waters, and W.H.J & Co. The majority of the images are albumen but also include gelatin silver prints and carte de visite photographs. Handwritten notes cite "Hardy, 1945" which may refer to the original Grahame Hardy collection acquired in 1945.
