Asa Gray letter to Leander Wetherell

In this letter to Leander Wetherell, a journalist and teacher at the Rochester Institute of New York, Gray discusses two of his publications: Manual of the botany of the northern United States (1848) and Genera florae Americae boreali-orientalis illustrata : the genera of the plants of the United States illustrated by figures and analyses from nature (1848). The letter is written on a lettersheet advertising the Lawrence Scientific School. Along with a description of the school, its admission requirements and course information, the letter announces that "Professor Agassiz will deliver a course of lectures 'On the History of the Earliest Geological Ages.'"

Robert Turnball letter to Reverend John Beers

In this letter, Turnbull talks about a trip he is going to take to Los Angeles (he writes from San Diego County) to look at some land. He also talks about several land grants in southern California including Rancho La Puente and Rancho Azusa; he also describes San Gabriel Valley in general and mentions some water problems in the area. The letter includes a hand-drawn map of the area surrounding Azusa and the La Puente Rancho. On the map, Turnbull writes "The land lying between Spadra [Pomona] and the Gov lands opposite Booth Ranch is the Rancho La Puente the Grant of whom your uncle bought" and "the squatters take the water out a the mouth of River carry across Dalton's Ranch on to the Gov lands the surplus reaching the Booth Ranch."

Letter to Gerry, recently appointed to a special diplomatic commission to France, in which Adams lists several objections and opinions previously expressed by others to Gerry's appointment. Adams also expresses his wish for peace with France but also his concerns with fidelity to the public and U.S. self-defense; he also discusses the character of General John Marshall. Letter is endorsed by Gerry.
