    In this letter written in Albany, Oregon, Cyrus Walker recounts past article he's written on Oregon history as well as articles he wishes to write based on his personal experiences. As well as being advised to write more articles for the Pacific Monthly by friends and admirers, Walker was also advised to write a book based on his "reminiscences of pioneer days" in Oregon. He proposes an idea to the editor in which he rewrites some older articles adding new material and writes some new ones. After publication in Pacific Monthly, he would then publish them together in book form.

    William H. Taft, Hot Springs, Virginia, letter to Hamilton Holt, New York :

    Manuscripts

    Taft writes to the managing editor of The Independent magazine that he would like to assist Holt but is not able to do anything until August, asks him to write again later in the month. Taft states that "The Independent has been very good to me and has supported me, especially with respect to the colored disaffection, and I am anxious to respond if I can, but you know human energy has its limitations."

    William P. Reynolds letter to Edward J. Reynolds

    Manuscripts

    William writes that his plans to bring Edward to California have been delayed, as William has not yet had a chance to purchase a tract of land for farming and cattle. Nonetheless, he writes, "in a short time Sonoro & Chihuahua will belong to the U.S." and so there will be plenty of opportunity for surveying; William recommends that Edward "follow the study in its higher branches." He also recommends drafting and that Edward "be a more skillful penman."

    John B. Williams letter to Ogden Hoffman

    Manuscripts

    Williams relates that "we are all in a state of excitement here, as everything depends on Grant's success." He also writes of a recent bill that is to rearrange the judicial districts of California, and of the effort to repeal the Act of 1860, which would transfer survey cases to the Land offices.
