    An original typescript draft of Paul Theroux's third novel, "Girls at play," with holographic corrections in Theroux's hand. The novel, set in East Africa, concerns the ambitions of three white women teachers at a girls' school. The novel was represented by literary agent H. N. Swanson and published in 1969 by The Bodley Head in the United Kingdom and by Houghton Mifflin Company in the United States. This draft appears to be that used by Houghton Mifflin.

    Remarks on the centennial of the New Madrid earthquakes

    A typescript copy of Rep. Russell's remarks on the House floor regarding the centennial of the New Madrid earthquakes. Attached is a copy of the letter from Eliza Bryan (1780-1866) to Lorenzo Dow (1816, Mar. 22), one of the most important eyewitness accounts of the earthquakes. Russell requested that the letter that "was recently published in the Dunklin Count Democrat, but so far as I know has never been published in any history," be inserted in the Congressional Record "in order to preserve it for future generations and in the interest of correct history."

    Francis Russell, Duke of Bedford, account book

    A manuscript volume containing the current accounts for Francis Russell, 7th Duke of Bedford, covering the years 1850 January 1-1858 December 31, with his bank Child & Co., London, England. The volume is divided into incoming funds on versos and sums paid on rectos and in some cases very large sums of money are recorded (£ 259,431); entries include, for example, income from Covent Garden Market and payments for kitchen gardens. The entries provide insights into the life of one of England's highest ranked peers. The volume is in very good condition, with contemporary vellum covers; the pages are ruled in red with entries mainly in one hand. The covers contain the title: "His Grace / the Duke of Bedford / Current Account / From 1st Jany / To 31st Decr 1858."

    This album primarily contains newspaper clippings and ephemera from the 1960s related to the 1960 play Ross about T.E. Lawrence by Terence Rattigan, the 1962 film Lawrence of Arabia, and a few clippings about the play Too True To Be Good by George Bernard Shaw. Among the items, there is a program for the first performance of Ross, sheet music for the 'Theme from Lawrence of Arabia' by Maurice Jarre, and two teacher's guides for the film. Album has light blue covers; with "Frank C. Baxter" bookplate.

    An autograph manuscript of the novel "Born in Exile," written between the years 1891-1892; with the original title "Godwin's Peak" crossed out on the first page. The novel deals with the themes of class, religion, love, and marriage and the premise of the novel is drawn from Gissing's early life.The manuscript contains additions and corrections by Gissing, with additional notes in pencil possibly by Gissing; the manuscript is made up of unbound, loose pages. The manuscript is housed in a brown morocco slipcase, with gold-tooled title and author's name on the spine.

    A history of the life of Grandfather Jesse Hobson

    Brief biography of Jesse Hobson (1812-1833). Begins with his birth in Randolph County, North Carolina, and outlines his early family life. Also traces Hobson's 1935 marriage to Catherine Daughtery in Cook County, Illinois; the couple's 1844 travels with the James Emmett Company up the Iowa River; their stay at Fort Vermillion (which Russell spells "Vermullion"), South Dakota, in 1845; their move to Council Bluffs in 1846 at the request of Brigham Young, who wanted them to assist Mormon immigrants; their 1847 stay at Winter Quarters and move to Pottawatamie County, Iowa; and their 1852 travels to Utah with the Benjamin Gardner Company. Russell also describes Hobson's travels to Nebraska with the George Miller Company to interact with Punca Indians and a detailed account of his travels from Utah to New York while on his way to a mission in England in 1856. Also references the death of Hobson's wife Catherine, includes a physical description of Hobson, and lists the birth dates and places of his children with Catherine and subsequent wives Nancy Henderson and Sarah Dowell. The full title of the biography is "A History of the Life of Grandfather Jesse Hobson, assembled from the Story given to Henry U. Russell by his mother, Lydia Ann Hobson Russell, eldest daughter of Grandfather Jesse Hobson; and from the diary of Grandfather Jesse Hobson."
