Description: A typescript copy of Rep. Russell's remarks on the House floor regarding the centennial of the New Madrid earthquakes. Attached is a copy of the letter from Eliza Bryan (1780-1866) to Lorenzo Dow (1816, Mar. 22), one of the most important eyewitness accounts of the earthquakes. Russell requested that the letter that "was recently published in the Dunklin Count Democrat, but so far as I know has never been published in any history," be inserted in the Congressional Record "in order to preserve it for future generations and in the interest of correct history."

Bertrand Russell letter to Harry R. Major

Manuscripts

In this letter, Russell is discussing his religious beliefs, or lack thereof. He says that he is unsure sometimes of his beliefs and call himself both an atheist and agnostic at varying times. He also states that he thinks the idea of "God" is very unlikely and the same as the belief in "the Gods of Olympus or Valhalla." The letter is written on Russell's own letterhead from his estate in Wales "Plas Penrhyn."

This group of items is comprised of three letters by Jessie Benton Frémont to George Whitwell Parsons, an article written by Jessie Benton Frémont, and a letter by George Whitwell Parsons to William Jennings Bryan. The Frémont letters discuss an article Jessie was writing on her husband, her father, the Bear Flag Revolt, and California history; an incomplete copy of that article is included in the group. The Parsons letter to Bryan consists of a request by Parsons to Bryan to speak to the members of the YMCA of Los Angeles; at the bottom of the page is a signed note by Bryan saying that it is "impossible."

Richard Armour letter to Paul Zall

Manuscripts

This letter, written to fellow writer Paul Zall, chiefly talks about British poet Barry Cornwall and Armour's book Barry Cornwall: a biography of Bryan Waller Procter. Armour also talks a little bit about some of his other published works. The letter is written on "Claremont Men's College Memorandum" letterhead.

Memorandum regarding California Bi-Centennial and Centennial

This memorandum by Frederick W. Cropp talks about the Bible being brought to California shortly after gold was discovered. He talks about Reverend Frederick Buel, the American Bible Society and the role of God and religion in California becoming part of the United States. With the memorandum is a facsimile copy of Cropp's article "Old Fine Gold in California," which he quotes in his memorandum.

Report on the field work with the Rainbow Bridge-Monument Valley expedition of 1934

This is a mimeographed copy of the official report resulting from the Rainbow Bridge-Monument Valley Expedition of 1934. These expeditions, which were privately funded and headed by Ansel Franklin Hall, took place from 1933-1938. The work was supervised by Lyndon Hargrave of the Museum of Northern Arizona and the crew consisted of archaeologists, paleontologists, botanists, biologists, and geologists. The report details the group's findings from their archaeological surveys and excavations of several early Anasazi (Pueblo) sites in northern Arizona and southern Utah. It also gives a detailed description of the geology of the region including Monument Valley, Navajo National Monument, the Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon and Zion National Park, and concludes with a chapter on the modern Indians of the region, the Hopi and Navajo. Also included are maps and seventy-two mounted original photographs. The forward is by Ansel Franklin Hall
