Letter from Jessie Benton Frémont on Bald Porcupine Island, Maine, to a friend named Carry. Frémont writes of the beauty of the Maine coast, a description of Bald Porcupine (with sketch maps), a description of her house and its furnishings, of her neighbors, and of observing a bald eagle. The letter also includes sketches of two girls with a walking stick, a hiking boot, and a shrub.

Miss Frémont writes that she is leaving town for a month and that a lady with a subscription book for the F.F. Society called on her that day, but she didn't have time to look into the matter. Miss Frémont told the caller that all connections to that society are now through her (Mrs. Howe) and that she would see her about it when she got back unless the matter was pressing. In that case, Mrs. Howe could write her at Long Beach. The letter is signed: Yours sincerely, E. Benton Frémont, Los Angeles, Thursday afternoon.

Benton writes of the capture of Colonel John Frémont, and how this has pacified California, allowing "an American to walk from one end of the province to the other without guards, and without insult or injury." Includes newspaper clipping of article in which the newly appointed Roman Catholic Archbishop of New York, John Hughes, is described as believing he would have influence with the people of Mexico amidst the current crisis.

Frémont informs Kern that Kern is in command of Fort Sacramento while Frémont is away. Frémont states he will return in ten days, at which time they will begin their journey home. Kern is given leave to shoot anyone who endangers the fort.
