In this letter, Frémont informs Kern of his appointment to become artist for Frémont's expedition west of the "Rocky Mts." Kern will be paid three dollars per diem, and his traveling expenses will be compensated at ten cents per mile. Kern will report to the city of St. Louis at once, where he will be given further instructions.

John Charles Frémont letter to "Mr. Wright,"

In this letter to the otherwise unidentified "Mr. Wright" of Washington, Frémont writes thata French company called "the Belgian Miners" has arrived in San Francisco, and are under lease to him. He shall put them to work immediately "on a good vein" and writes that "their report to France will be of great importance." During his time in the South, Frémont reports that he "obtained a great deal of information relative to mines." He has found another rich vein, but is not sure of the ore it contains - he has sent a piece to England for identification - and has acquired a large amount of land that may be of considerable value. Frémont states that they have no commissioner, but hopes the President will "send out others without delay." He hopes Mr. Wright will act on his behalf in this and other matters.

This letter was written by John Charles Frémont, from Ciudad de Los Angeles as Governor and Commander in Chief of California. it is addressed to "Don Felipe Lugo, Don Macedonia Aguilar, Don Thomas Sanchez." The letter reads as follows: "Gentlemen, You are hereby appointed by me as Governor of California a board of survey to ascertain the number of cattle killed and to whom they belonged, by the U.S. Forces under the command of Commodore Stockton & Genl. Kearny and report the same with all needful particulars to me at your earliest convenience. Your acceptance of this commission will be considered a matter of course unless you instruct me to the contrary. Very Respectfully, J. C. Frémont, Governor & Commander in Chief of California." It was attested by the Secretary of State, William H. Russell.

Edward Meyer Kern letter to "Mary"

In this letter to "Mary", Kern reports that Frémont has moved on, leaving Kern in Taos, New Mexico. As Kern writes, "...he has broken faith with all of us.....he left us with no good wishes." However, he has been treated well in Taos since Frémont's departure, and is regaining the strength lost during the crossing of the mountains. Includes illustration by the author. One of his companions has attempted to retrieve some of the property they abandoned during their perilous journey through the mountains. Kern is hoping to soon begin traveling home by train. Signed "Ned." "Mary" may be Mary Kern Wolfe.
