Kazunobu Sunouchi application for admission into the United States

    Manuscripts

A typewritten copy of a legal appeal relating to the 1912 immigration application of Kazunobu Sunouchi; his application was initially denied, but this statement of facts in the appeal shows the willful ignorance and prejudice of the immigration officer (Inspector Farmar) who processed his entry. This appeal to the denied application for entry shows the repeated attempts by Inspector Farmar in purposefully trying to confuse both the Japanese-English interpreter, as well as Kazunobu Sunouchi. The appeal was ultimately successful by clarifying that Sunouchi was not a contract laborer but had a firm job offer from his family; this application appeal was written by Sunouchi's attorney. The pages of this manuscript are becoming brittle and beginning to tear; the final pages are damaged, with some loss of text.
