First edition published 1878. "Undoubtedly the most important textbook of this half-century was Richmond's Grammar which found its first readership amongst the subscribers to a lithographic trade periodical and, after republication in book form, remained in print virtually unaltered as the standard "trade" manual for the next 30 years. Richmond acknowledged the help of four luminaries of the old school, Louis Haghe, Michael Hanhart, William Simpson and Harry Sandars (i.e. W. J. Stannard), and they no doubt helped him to achieve a balanced coverage of traditional and modern workshop approaches as well as enhancing the work's authority." -Bridson/Wakeman p. 129 and D67. One book entitled Industrial Art Text Books: A Graded Course in Art in its Relation to Industry, by Bonnie E. Snow and Hugo B. Froehlich, published by Laidlaw Brothers, Chicago and New York, copyright 1924. This is a revised edition of Part Six from an eight part set. This book is 64 pages in length, and contains both color and black and white illustrations. The topics addressed in this volume include: color and design; drawing and design; lettering and design; art in dress; art in the home; and art in handwork. The front and back covers are printed with a vertically striped design. The inside of the front cover and the inside of the back cover are decorated with geometric patterns. Each chapter begins with introductory text and an explanation of each of the types of projects contained within it. The rest of each chapter suggests projects to create which emphasize the topic for that chapter. The final page of the book suggests tests that art teachers can assign in order to evaluate the progress of their students. "J.E. Cargill" and "3.00" (price) are written in ms. at the top of the front cover. "J. Evelyn Cargill" is written in ms. at the top of the title page.

One penmanship book entitled Lessons in Lettering: A Series of Practice Books With Text, Examples and Exercises, Book 2 Inclined Single Stroke, by Thomas E. French and William D. Turnbull, published by McGraw-Hill Book Company, Inc., New York and London, 1924. This book is 40 pages in length, and is comprised of 20 lessons on numbered sheets. At the head of the first page is the overall lesson for the book: "Inclined Single Stroke Commercial Gothic". Each sheet, or lesson, includes instructional text on the left-hand side of each page opening, and the actual lesson and copying space on the right-hand side. The title on the front cover is within a single-rule frame. The top inside front cover reads: "Second edition, fifth impression". Below that is a listing of materials required for the use of this book, and below that is a brief advertisement for "Lessons in Lettering for Students and Draftsmen: a series of practice books with text examples and exercises." On the inside of the back cover are four variations of a single alphabet and number "face" that are part of Sheet 20. On the back cover is a brief advertisement for several drawing and lettering books. Several publisher's advertisements for drawing books and vocational books are laid in to this lettering book. None of the exercises have been completed.

Two drawing books entitled American Text Books of Art Education: Intermediate Course, Numbers One and Three, by Walter Smith, published by L. Prang & Company, Boston, 1875. Each book contains 20 numbered pages, and numbered exercises. Each exercise consists of very brief instructional text, an image, and space for copying. In Book One, many of the exercises focus on patterns, shapes and designs made from lines and shapes. Book Three focuses more on replication of forms, such as vases, drinking glasses and solids. Some of the exercises in the books have been completed by previous owners. The front covers of each bear the decorative symbol often used on the front covers of Smith instructional books. The inside front cover of Book One contains definitions of terms used throughout the book. The inside back cover gives general directions for the student and teacher, and lists the "principles of design illustrated" in the book. On the back cover is a descriptive outline of the Smith drawing course for the four levels of schools. The inside of the front cover of Book Three contains general use directions and illustrated definitions of "geometrical solids defined and described." On the inside of the back cover are: "Elementary principles to be taught and observed in model and object drawing: freehand." The back cover contains the same outline of the Smith system for the public schools as Book One. "Lutie Tompkins" is written in ms., in ink, along the top of the front cover of Book One. "McDonald" is written in ms., in ink, on the front cover of Book Three.

Manuscripts
The Carey Bliss files comprise the bulk of the collection. The articles and research files contain work created by Carey Bliss while he was a student at Pomona College and while he was a curator at the Huntington library. The correspondence covers his work as a curator, including a single thank you letter from Richard Nixon for the repair of the Nixon's family bible. The lecture files contain notes for a course that Carey Bliss taught at the University of Southern California on the history of books and printing. These notes include a sheet of papyrus in the folder for lectures three and four. The Rounce & Coffin Club files pertain to Carey Bliss's longstanding membership. The files contain meeting invitations and information on exhibitions prepared by the club, including the annual Western Books Exhibition.
