    Helen Kern Grills photograph album and diary

    A memory book kept by Helen Kern Grills during her trip west with her family beginning in May 1925 from her home in McKeesport, Pennsylvania to the West Coast, and ending back in Marion, Ohio. The album has a combination of 291 labeled photos and post cards and 45 typed pages of a diary of her trip. Also included are a Band program dated June 5, 1925 from Long Beach, CA; a movie house program dated June 20, 1925 from Long Beach, CA; a map of southern California; the June 25, 1925 Mount Lowe Daily News along with the history of Mt. Lowe Railway. There is a San Diego and Coronado Ferry Ticket and brochure on Yosemite National Park; a map of Yellowstone National Park and three Yellowstone National Park geyser schedules. There are also a substantial number of photographs and descriptions of Missions in California as well as Long Beach, California. The roughly three month trip was accomplished through the use of trains, cars, boats, horses and buses.

    John Neff diary

    In this day-to-day diary of Neff's trip he talks in detail about the weather, landscape, cattle and horses being stolen, problems with Indians, hunting along the way, members of his group getting sick, and fights amongst members of his group. The diary only covers the trip from Ohio to Salt Lake City (1854, April 11 - August 9). It includes a forward by John L. Ford and map showing the route Neff took from Ohio to California.

    Lundy B. Hogue diary of a trip from Ohio to California

    Hogue began his trip to California in July 1875 from Belmont, Ohio. He traveled through Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, Wyoming, and Nevada by railroad. He talks about the Missouri River, Cheyenne, Mormon villages, Fort Bridger, the Humboldt River Valley, and hundreds of Chinese workers he sees along the way. Hogue arrived in Sacramento and then he proceeded to travel to San Francisco, Santa Barbara, Carpinteria, and Ventura. While in California, Hogue purchased land. He returned to Ohio in January 1876. The volume also contains several entries from another trip Hogue took in 1882.

    Reminiscences of California : an autograph manuscript

    Welsh wrote reminiscences of his journey to, and life in California in the 1880s and 90s. There is particular emphasis on citrus orchard management and labor in Southern California and a cattle drive or autumn round-up from the Rancho Los Cerritos. Also included are descriptions of cities and towns in Southern California encompassing people, geology, climate, flora and fauna. Excursions in and around Southern California are well described including trips to Long Beach, Santa Monica, Catalina Island and Death Valley.

    Microfilm of two diaries kept by Heber Bennion between 1888 and 1897. The first volume, identified as volume 4, is dated 1888-1889 and covers Bennion's mission to eastern states, including Ohio, New York, Pennsylvania, and Washington, D.C. The second volume begins following Bennion's return home to Provo in 1889, and traces his travels and daily activities in Utah through 1897.
