Coats, professor of art history and the humanities at Scripps College, surveys the extraordinary literary and visual art traditions inspired by the 11th-century novel The Tale of Genji, written by Japanese court lady Murasaki Shikibu, with an emphasis on how the novel has been imaged and reimagined for a millennium.
