New exhibition explores how German Renaissance artist Albrecht Dürer’s travels to Italy and beyond, and the cultural exchange with his contemporaries, transformed European art.

This exhibition displays 24 objects and a participatory artwork highlighting how historical Chinese gardens have served as spaces that not only delight the senses and nourish the body but also inspire the mind—both intellectually and spiritually.

“Storm Cloud: Picturing the Origins of Our Climate Crisis,” puts today’s environmental issues in historical context, examining the profound changes that industrialization and a globalized economy have wrought on everyday life, as charted by artists, scientists, and writers during the 19th century.

“Portrait of José Antonio Caballero, Second Marqués de Caballero, Secretary of Grace and Justice” (1807) will go on view Nov. 29, 2023, in the Huntington Art Gallery.

The Huntington announced today the appointment of Josh Garrett-Davis as the H. Russell Smith Foundation Curator of Western American History. Garrett-Davis has served for the past seven years as the Gamble Curator of Western History, Popular Culture, and Firearms at the Autry Museum of the American West in Los Angeles.

The Huntington will produce a major exhibition and book on Black artist Sargent Claude Johnson, whose powerful works—masks, portrait busts, and figural sculptures created in the 1920s and 1930s—have become emblems of the Harlem Renaissance. This will be the first exhibition devoted to Johnson in over 25 years.

Spanning more than 450 years, the works come from a diverse group of artists from across the globe, including Edward Mitchell Bannister, Agostino Brunias, Dominique Fung, David Hockney, Letitia Huckaby, Mineo Mizuno, Kenjiro Nomura, Sandy Rodriguez, Betye Saar, Lilly Martin Spencer, Nari Ward, and Qiu Ying.

The Huntington has announced the acquisition of Zhou Dunyi Admiring Lotuses, a rare hanging scroll painted by Qiu Ying (ca. 1495–ca. 1552), one of the most celebrated Chinese artists of the 16th century.

Items range from handmade jewelry to frameable art and home goods, all in tune with The Huntington’s remarkable library, art, and botanical collections.

Renowned American artist Betye Saar’s large-scale work “Drifting Toward Twilight” will go on view Nov. 11, 2023, in the Virginia Steele Scott Galleries of American Art.
