How Do Plants Get Light? | Plant Adaptations

Light is one of the three ingredients plants need to make their own food during photosynthesis, along with carbon dioxide and water. But what happens when there is too much or too little light? They adapt!

Disponible en Español.

Check for Understanding

  • How do different plants get the light they need?
  • Plants need water, light, and carbon dioxide to make their own food. What happens when there is too much or too little of each?

Take It Further

  • Think of a plant you’re familiar with. How long do you think it could survive without sunlight? How would it adapt to get it?
  • Which plant adaptation to get light is your favorite? Why?

Create

  • Pick a plant you like and design a plant adaptation to help the plant get more light. You can draw or write about your idea.
  • Design an experiment to test how much light different plants need. Make predictions about which plant needs more sunlight. Test your predictions by conducting the experiment and tracking your observations over time.

Make a Personal Connection

  • Leaves help plants take in energy from sunlight to convert into food (sugars). Can you think of any other things you know about that use sunlight or solar energy?
