Sunday Supper with Zócalo Public Square

Join urban farming leader Jamiah Hargins of Crop Swap L.A. , Carola Di Poi, head gardener of The Huntington’s Ranch and Kitchen Gardens, and Bianca Collins, Zócalo Public Square’s Director of Public Programs, to engage with questions inspired by THIS LAND IS … and discuss food justice, community empowerment, and urban farming in a dynamic program designed in collaboration with Zócalo Public Square. An intimate garden dinner follows, where guests will feast on brick-oven pizza with seasonal toppings and be given conversation prompts inspired by Hargins’ work on hyperlocal solutions to transform food deserts and spark community connections. 

Can we squash food deserts? Can food build political and social power? Can urban farming protect against crises facing food systems worldwide, such as drought, fire, and inflation? Can gardens reconnect and regenerate communities? And why is it more sustainable to grow a squash than a carrot? Participants will learn about Los Angeles County’s food deserts, areas where affordable, nutritious food is out of reach, and dive into how neighbors can transform unused spaces like front lawns, schools, and alleyways into sustainable micro farms to grow their own grains, fruits, and vegetables to feed friends and family and reshape cityscapes block by block.
