Portrait of a Woman
While neither the artist nor the subject or this work is known, the fine rendering of the facial features and the adept treatment of the fabrics reflect an artist with considerable training and talent. According to the donor, the subject of this portrait lived in New York or eastern Long Island. Based on the style of the kerchief and the cap with lace lappets – long pieces attached to the cap securing it under the chin – this portrait was painted in the 1780s.
