Baronet with Sam Chifney Up

George Stubbs recorded the riding style for which Sam Chifney was well known, seated far back in the saddle with a relaxed rein and inactive whip. He is seen here on the Prince of Wales’ horse, Baronet, who was most famous for his 1791 victory in the Oatland Stakes, when he defeated eighteen other horses against 20-1 odds. Stubbs made this painting as the first in a series called the Turf Review, which was conceived as a monumental pictorial record of English racing history.
