Drawings

Beaumaris Castle, Anglesey

1 of 2

Though Turner made this drawing for inclusion in a published series of topographical views of England and Wales, its topographical details, like the castle, are fairly minimal. Instead, Turner uses touches of white to draw the eye to the sails of the ship on the distant strait, or to the foreground group, where a boy in bright red trousers takes a break from digging to rest on his shovel. The castle itself is nearly obscured by the iridescent atmosphere, created by overlaying washes in various colors. These are applied so lightly in some areas that the underlayer shows through, creating a mottled effect in which features of the landscape appear to emerge through dissipating mist (2022).
