A lady holds a musical score in her right hand and conducts a flautist and lute player with her left. The idyllic outdoor setting is animated by the tension between the chivalrous trio in the foreground and the crude courtship enacted in the background, a theme Pater borrowed from his master, Jean-Antoine Watteau (1684-1721) (see cat. 145).
