  A panoramic photograph documenting about 100 agricultural workers, including men, women, and children, of an unidentified farm in Orange County, California, taken between approximately 1900 and 1920. The photograph features mostly white workers, but there are several Latino men, possibly Mexican migrant workers, and about fifteen women and girls. Some workers are holding tools or equipment, wearing slings for picking fruit, or handling horses. Behind the two rows of people are stacks of wooden crates labeled "F Co.," along with a wagon of hay and a two-story wooden building. The photograph is not captioned, but has a small photographer's label crediting commercial photographer F. D. Leonard of Santa Ana, California.

  Press photographs of Latino laborers and field workers in California

  Visual Materials

  A group of eight press photographs of chiefly Latino agricultural workers, their children, and their living conditions in California, dating between 1958 and 1989. There is one photograph taken near Las Vegas, Nevada in 1959 showing children fetching polluted water from an irrigation ditch; it is captioned "children of jobless migrant workers." The unrelated photographs are credited to the Associated Press, the New York Times, and others, and were published in various newspapers, with detailed captions attached. Subjects include workers' shacks in Mendota, Central Valley; a field worker in Salinas carrying a short-handled hoe, which was later banned in California; tomato picking; a female picker; and a white woman, identified as Mrs. Henry Pennington, comforting her disheveled child in a dusty, rural area.

  Photographs of the Southern California Packing Company

  Visual Materials

  A collection of 36 photographs related to the Southern California Packing Company of Los Angeles, California, and its secretary manager Marion Welsh (or Welch) and his family. Photographs include views of the interior and exterior of the plant located at the corner of Macy Street (now East Cesar E. Chavez Avenue) and Anderson Street in the Boyle Heights neighborhood; male, female, and child workers, including two group portraits; various food processing departments depicting fruit, canning, packing, syrup and jelly making and one montage of various departments; railroad freight cars along the Los Angeles River, identified as a special shipment sent east on October 6, 1892; and views of houses occupied by the Welsh family at 930 Macy Street and 114 Anderson Street. There is also single photograph of a row of soldiers standing at attention with rifles (item 28) and a studio portrait of Clyde Welsh as a young man (item 36). Removed mounts for some of the photographs bear printed labels for Putnam, Cromwell & Westervelt, and Coules Palace Studio.

  Photos of San Gabriel Valley and the California citrus industry

  Visual Materials

  Consists of nine photographs. photPF 980 is of San Gabriel's Church of Our Savior, which was the first Protestant church in the San Gabriel Valley. photPF 982 features Chinese, Korean, Japanese, and Caucasian fruit workers standing around open crates of fruit (with one labeled "The Duffy Co") inside an exchange building. photPF 983 is a view of track laying for the Los Angeles and San Gabriel Valley Railway in the Arroyo Seco. photPF 984-988 are various scenes of the California citrus industry, primarily focusing on orange groves and workers. Subjects and locations include the Whittier Citrus Association, Riverside's first Washington naval tree, irrigation canals in orange groves, and the Redlands. photPF 989 is a postcard of a display at an early citrus fair in San Bernardino County featuring a small point sitting on the front of a miniature train decorated with lemons and oranges.

  Clark Kinsey photograph of Japanese lumber camp workers and their families in Washington

  Visual Materials

  A group portrait of lumber camp workers of Japanese heritage, and their families, in front of a camp building with railroad tracks at the doorstep. The gelatin silver photograph, 11 x 14 inches, depicts 31 men, three women, several young children and babies, and a dog. A few men are holding babies and one man is posed holding a watering can above a flowering planter box. Handwriting at the bottom of the print reads: "This is All Japanese Boys at Camp" and the photographer's credit is in the negative: # 65 Kinsey Photo. These loggers worked for the Manley-Moore Lumber Company, which operated approximately 1910 to 1934 on a tract of old growth timber in Pierce County, Washington.
