An album of photographs of groups of people gathered for reunions and commemorations of the Civil War, chiefly in the 1880s. The album contains albumen prints, 7 x 9 inches, mounted on board, with no handwriting or identifications, though many are at Gettysburg. Some groups are posed at battlefield monuments that reveal locations, such as one at Little Round Top, and another of five veterans posed with historian John B. Bachelder at the 29th Ohio Infantry Monument, Gettysburg. Men are often wearing badges or ribbons with a star, and sometimes military hats. A few women also appear in the groups. Two photographs depict crowds gathered to hear a speaker on a platform, and another shows a group standing in front of a tree posted with a sign reading "Here is where Gen. Reynolds was killed, July 1, 1863." Identified photographers are: P. S. Weaver (view of a group on Culp's Hill at Gettysburg), W. H. Tipton, Rile, and Rile & Kerns. Two mounted photographs by Mathew Brady, 1862, were laid in the album: "No. 207. Soldiers' Graves at Bull Run" and "No. 237. Ruins at Manassas." The Brady images and two others loose from the album are housed in Box 2.

Album of Photographic Postcards of Mexican border wars

An album of photographic postcards pertaining to battles along the U.S.-Mexico border during the Mexican Revolution, approximately 1913-1916. Images include soldiers and officers, military camp life, views of artillery and trenches, Yaqui Indian soldiers, U.S. Army cavalry and refugee camps. Notable among the photographs are many views of dead soldiers and executions by hanging or firing squad. The compiler of this disbound album is unknown; photographs are mounted on paper album pages, and there are many handwritten captions on the pages. Dates written in captions range between 1913 and 1916, and several make reference to battles at Naco and Agua Prieta in Sonora, Mexico in 1913. Other locations represented include military encampments at Nogales, Arizona and Agua Prieta; a refugee camp at Douglas, Arizona; and a bird's-eye-view of the town of Columbus, New Mexico. Some photographs show child soldiers brandishing guns, civilian spectators viewing bodies, and one view of a U.S. airplane squadron. There are three photographs of Pancho Villa, including a group portrait with Gen. Rodolfo Fierro and Gen. Hugh Lenox Scott. Other portraits include Álvaro Obregón and officers; Yaqui leader Luis Bule; Francisco I. Madero; Pascual Orozco and General P.E. Calles. There is one view of the dead body of Enrique Portillo; other photographs of executed men are identified by nicknames or surnames only. Most of the photographic postcards are by Walter H. Horne (credit "W.H. Horne Co.") of El Paso, Texas, with several also by photographer Calvin ("Cal") Osbon of Douglas, Arizona. Osbon's photographs are notable for lengthy, descriptive captions imprinted in the images. The formats are almost all photographic postcards, except for a few smaller photographs and one larger group portrait labelled "Carranza Cabinet" showing Venustiano Carranza and others at Agua Prieta, May, 1914.

Collection of Civil War photographs including war casualties

A collection of 63 Civil War photographs compiled by John P. Nicholson, Civil War veteran and collector. The albumen photographs are mounted on boards that had been bound into an album (now disbound). Most are undated and have little identification, though some have faded pencil writing on back. Many images depict battlefields, primarily in Gettysburg, such as Little Round Top, Devil's Den, and others. Of particular note are photographs of war dead on the battlefield by Mathew B. Brady and Timothy O'Sullivan (1863); and an image of a dead young man, labeled a "rebel sharpshooter," by Alexander Gardner. Another image shows Brady overlooking "The Wheat Field" at Gettysburg, July 1863, attributed to Egbert Guy Fowx. There are several group portraits of soldiers and officers, often at camp, sitting or standing in front of tents; one features officers with women, presumably their wives or family members. Those identified include General Francis Preston Blair Jr. and staff; soldiers of the 8th New York State Militia at camp; 1st U.S. Cavalry at Brandy Station, Virginia; musical band of the 114th Pennsylvania Infantry (Zouaves); and artillery of the Army of the Cumberland near Chattanooga, Tennessee. Other subjects are: General George G. Meade's headquarters; men building fortifications; a government coal wharf and the Orange and Alexandria Railroad roundhouse in Alexandria, Virginia; a bird's-eye-view of Washington, D.C. with the Capitol and Smithsonian Institute Building "The Castle"; and a panoramic image of "the field over which Pickett charged" by photographer William Bell. A few images include Black men in civilian clothing. The album is disbound, and three photographs have been matted and housed in Box 2.

Photograph album of veterans reunions and monuments at Gettysburg, with some Civil War images

A collection of 97 photographs, chiefly of Civil War veterans, monuments, and other views at Gettysburg National Memorial Park, taken approximately 1890 to 1910. The photographs were compiled into an album (now disbound) by John P. Nicholson, Civil War veteran and collector. There are a few wartime photographs dating to the 1860s, but the majority were taken in the years after the Gettysburg battlefield was designated a national park in 1893. The albumen photographs are various sizes and are mounted on boards. Many depict veterans gathered in groups at Gettysburg, sometimes in front of a monument for a specific army division. Women and children appear in some images, posing with monuments, and there are portraits of individuals in uniforms, mostly unidentified. Other subjects are: landscape views of former battlefields (with annotations identifying landmarks), graves, gun carriages outside a barn, cannons, visitors in horse and buggy, and the Old Soldiers Home (Washington, D.C.). Six small images on page 47 date to much earlier; there are two wartime images of Ulysses S. Grant and officers seated outside a tent; a group of soldiers standing by cabins; and single images of three of Grant's horses, "Jeff. Davis, Cincinnati, and Egypt," at City Point, Virginia, 1865. Some images are by William Tipton and one is credited to F. Gutekunst. The album is disbound, and two photographs have been matted and housed in Box 2.

Sylvester Thomas Blue photograph album and correspondence related to World War II in China

A photograph album and letters documenting the experiences of Sylvester Thomas "Bud" Blue, a private in the United States Marine Corps, in Shanghai, China, during World War II. The album contains 127 photographs: personal snapshots, photo booth portraits, commercially-made photographs, and a few photographic postcards of Shanghai. The album has no writing and people are not identified. Subjects include American and Chinese soldiers; images of war dead and destruction in Shanghai; a military parade; portraits of American and Chinese women; and scenes of soldiers drilling and at leisure. A few images show prominent figures such as Chiang Kai-shek and Soong May-ling, and other military scenes in Shanghai. Accompanying the album are nine letters from Blue to his parents in Danville, Illinois, posted from Shanghai and elsewhere between 1939 and 1945. One letter includes a newspaper clipping noting Blue and other soldiers being sent to the Fourth Marines in China.
