  An album of photographs with detailed captions compiled by American educator Charles Kenneth Lawyer documenting his time teaching at the Himeji Middle School near Osaka, Japan from 1923 to 1925. The album is partly a travelogue of Lawyer's experience living and working in Japan, as it contains typed, detailed captions pasted into the pages next to mostly original photographs. The photographs show Lawyer with both Japanese and American friends and colleagues, his Japanese students, housekeeper, and other residents in everyday activities. Images include women laundering kimonos, rural farmers harvesting and planting crops, street scenes, and tourist sites throughout Japan. There are 15 photographs showing the damage and destruction caused by the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923, including ruined business and residential areas, burned streetcars, and Japanese residents whose homes were destroyed by the earthquake. The album also includes a loose 1924 letter from the American Refugee Relief Committee's Earthquake Relief Fund.

  World War I photograph album: "Photographic History of the A.E.F. in France, 1917-1919."

  An album of 36 photographs (5 x 7 inches) with detailed, typed captions pasted below. Views show American soldiers in France during World War I; battle scenes; war dead; one view of King George V decorating an American soldier; bombed buildings; French villagers with soldiers; women in military service; a parade of soldiers in New York. The album compiler is unidentified and the photographs are uncredited, though appear to have been made by a professional photojournalist or military photographer, based on proximity to battle action. Album has typed title: "Photographic History of the A.E.F. in France, 1917-1919" on the first page.

  Photograph album of street peddlers in Mexican towns

  A small album containing 14 carte de visite-size photographs of street vendors in Mexico. The first page has a handwritten title: "Street Peddlars in Mexican Towns / A collection of 13 Old Photographs 1850 to 1860-," and the following pages have mounted albumen photographs with handwritten captions. Most portraits were taken in a studio, and they include both men and women carrying large amounts of goods or other items related to their work. Image captions are: Charcoal seller; Selling lottery tickets on Sunday; Indian selling baskets (male); Indian pottery seller; Palm leaf peddler; Birdcage peddler; Charcoal man; Indian with band of wood, in the village of Batopela [i.e. Batopilas, Chihuahua]; Indian selling wooden trays; Cargadora; Water carrier; Selling baskets; Indian peddling turkeys; Indian selling mats.

  Photograph album of 6th U.S. Cavalry during Mexican Expedition against Pancho Villa

  Photographs of the 6th U.S. Cavalry troops in Texas near the Mexico border during the Mexican Expedition (or Punitive Expedition) against Pancho Villa, 1916 to 1917. The operation was conducted by the U.S. after Villa's raid on Columbus, New Mexico, in 1916. The photographs include soldiers and camp tents in the desert, horse corrals, troops drilling and on patrol in the mountains, men making adobe bricks, and a soldier posing with his gun pointed at the camera. Most of the images have captions written in the negative, and several are photographic postcards. All identified locations are in Texas: Marfa, Pecos Canyon, Dick Love's Ranch, and the Sierra Blanca train depot.

  This collection contains photographs taken or compiled by Philip B. Harris, related to his 42-year career with the Los Angeles Railway and his service as a captain in the U.S. Army Engineers, World War I. The majority of railroad construction scenes are related to the Los Angeles Railway, approximately 1905-1920s. Images include: construction and engineering work on railroads in the Los Angeles area; Harris and other men working on surveying projects, 1902, in Mount Lowe and Garvanza; survey parties in the California Sierras and San Bernardino Mountains. Some images appear to depict the Pacific Electric Railway construction surveying party that Harris was put in charge of soon after he graduated, in 1901. A photograph album, 1901-approximately 1919, includes views of Redondo Beach; personal images of Harris and family members; San Pedro Harbor; and railroad tracks being laid for a streetcar line. Several images show Latino workers digging and laying tracks, approximately 1903. The album has handwritten captions for several photographs, but many scenes are unidentified. The images of World War I France include 52 photographs by Harris, with some commercial photographic postcards. Images show war ruins; decorated graves; battlefields; soldiers; people at train stations; countryside scenes, and a group portrait of Harris and other uniformed soldiers at Roymeaux Field, May 21, 1919. There are also photographic postcards of various tourist scenes in France and war-damaged buildings. Box 3 contains a rolled panoramic photograph of over 100 soldiers, including Harris, of the U.S. Army corps of engineers, 1918, at Fort Harrison, Indiana. The collection also includes a typewritten biographical sketch of Harris and a list of names and addresses of engineers and railroad workers from Harris' address book.

  Philippine American War photograph albums

  Four photograph albums containing a total of 218 images (chiefly 4.5 x 6.5 inches) of the Philippine American War, taken by an unidentified photographer most likely associated with the 19th U.S. infantry stationed in Cebu, Philippines. Primarily in Cebu with some in San Nicolas and elsewhere, the images document Filipino life and culture as well as U.S. soldiers in military activities and recreation. Three photographs depict the refueling of a hospital ship in Hong Kong, and there are also images of the recruitment of Indigenous soldiers in Puerto Rico, and rare views of the surrenders of Filipino generals Mateo Noriel Luga and Aguedo del Rosario. The photographs are captioned and numbered continuously throughout the four albums. The first album, images 1 to 54, contains mostly detailed panoramas (3.5 x 12 inches) of Cebu and its port, plaza, and bay. The second album, images 55 to 109, contains a range of subjects including the 19th Infantry band baseball team, Filipino homes and families, elaborate Holy Day celebrations in San Nicolas, and several photographs of insurgents and their surrenders. The third album, images 111 to 165, includes church interiors, street and market scenes, and a family identified as "Spaniard and Filipino Mixed Family." The fourth album, images 166 to 218, includes several scenes from the 19th Infantry's training in Michigan, prior to their arrival in the Philippines; interior shots of Colonel Edward J. McClernand's home; a church procession in the streets of Cebu; and the deportation of prisoners to Guam. Some writing in the album reflects racist views toward Filipino and Chinese people.
