Description: Consists of five photographs. One photograph is of the Law Quadrangle at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Four mounted photographs are of a group outing at the Casa Verdugo restaurant (later La Ramanda, and also known as Catalina Verdugo Adobe), which once sat at the terminus of a Pacific Electric Railway line at Casa Verdugo Park. Featured in these photos are the proprietress Piedad Yorba de Sowl's daughter Viola Yorba, and Viola's cousin Ernest Martinez, who performed as child singers/dancers at the restaurant, along with their dog, Negro, who was a popular greeter for the establishment. The Casa Verdugo photos were transferred from the Henry Edwards Huntington Papers (formerly HEH Biographical File).

Visual Materials

One album contains 11 matted gelatin silver prints of exteriors and garden features. The other album contains duplicates of these prints, plus three postcards and another print. The postcards were written to Yoch and Council by Zelia Nuttall, two from Tampico, Mexico, on New Year's Eve in 1931, and the other undated, from Mexico City. According to James Yoch, Yoch and Council did not provide original landscape design for Casa Alvarado, but may have contributed ideas and altered existing gardens at Casa Alvarado.

Miscellaenous photographs in Oregon and California

Visual Materials

Consists of eleven photographs, includuing copy prints, photoprints, and mounted photographs. Most have inscriptions on the verso. photPF 2431-2434 depicted construction and staff at Fort Dalles, Oregon. photPF 2435 is a portrait of Judge George Henry Williams, the United States Attorney General under President Ulysses S. Grant and third chief justice of the Oregon Supreme Court. photPF 2436 is a photogrpah of a minature portrait of Presley Neville O'Bannon of the United States Marine Corps, reknown for his participation in the First Barbary War and the Battle of Derna, Libya. photPF 2437 is a cabinet card of the Shorb family home which formerly sat the grounds of the Huntington estate in San Marino; notes on the verso indicate when the structure was built and remodeled. A second photograph labeled photPF 2437 is of Guajome Ranch (Coutt's Ranch) in San Diego County. photPF 2438 is a copy print of the Moneyan Institute of San Gabriel, designed by William Money who was widely regarded as Los Angeles' first cult leader. photPF 2439 is a portrait of Jules Simoneau, a close friend of Robert Louis Stevenson. photPF 2440 is a photograph of the first casting of the "Mildred and William Dean Howells" bronze relief which currently sits in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C. (NPG.65.65). An inscription in Mildred's hand is written on the verso, and it is accompanied by a note from Mildred addressed to Mr. Schad.

Manuscripts

The collection deals primarily with the professional activities of Olin C. Wilson, who was most active from the mid-1930s into the 1980s. Wilson corresponded frequently with astronomers from a variety of universities in the United States and abroad, and the collection is representative of the deeply international and collaborative nature of astronomical and astrophysical research in the second half of the twentieth century. It also contains valuable and insightful material related to the schism between Mount Wilson and CalTech in the 1970s and 1980s, and the near-demise of Mount Wilson during that decade.

Consists of ten photographs, including one cyanotype print. Subjects include views of Carmelita (the residence of Mrs. Carr) including one by C. E. Watkins, the garden at Glen Annie, an oak tree in the center of Orange Grove Ave., an oak tree in the center of Orange Grove and Columbia Avenues, a view of early Marengo Avenue towards the Raymond Hotel, the Allen Tennis Court with Annie Allen, Bell's House, The Arroyo Vista, and La Casa Grande Hotel.

Chinese Tuxedo Restaurant papers

Manuscripts

Collection includes a bilingual menu in English and Chinese, illustrated with photos of the restaurant and staff. There is also a postcard featuring a photo of the restaurant interior, and a handwritten party invitation card to dinner at the restaurant, from "Mess Tom Mon Kip, Tom Ming, Tom Ying, and Der-Foo Sam."
