Description: Primarily a collection of early stereographs depicting the development of Southern California landmarks, cities, activities, buildings, and landscapes; plus a small group of stereographs from the London Stereoscopic Series of North America. One stereograph features a curio store in Santa Fe related to Philip Nathanson's family; another stereograph is an advertisement for a special sweetheart stereoviewer. The collection also includes an album of postcard views of the California missions.

Stereographic photographs of the moon and two observatories

Manuscripts

A group of 12 stereoscopic photographs of the moon, and two stereoscopic photographs of observatories. The stereographs are on card mounts containing two images, which, when viewed through a stereoscope, produce a 3D image. The stereographs were produced by various photographers and publishers, including: "Anthony's Stereoscopic Views," made by E. & H. T. Anthony and Co.; John P. Soule; Joseph Ward; C. Bierstadt (from negatives taken by Prof. H. Draper); Bierstadt Bros. (from negatives by L. M. Rutherford. Taken 1864.); Joseph L. Bates; and H. C. Smith. There is an image of an observatory in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and another showing two men with telescopes outside an observatory in Northfield, Minnesota.

Manuscripts

A collection of material assembled by Philip D. Nathanson related to the writer Kenneth Millar (Ross Macdonald). The collection includes drafts of novels, notebooks, screenplays, book reviews, essays, correspondence, and ephemera. The manuscript material includes drafts, notes, and introductions for the novels Black Money, The Galton Case, The Instant Enemy, and The Underground Man. Significant correspondents and companies in the collection include, among others: Don Freeman, Lydia Freeman, Douglas Heyes, Walter Hill, Marc Jaffe, Robert R. Kirsch, Margaret Millar, Dorothy Olding, Lorenzo Semple, Jr., Jack Smith, Harold Norling Swanson, Tracy Keenan Wynn, Alfred A. Knopf, Inc., and Harold Ober Associates.

Carleton E. Watkins Stereograph Collection

This collection contains 269 stereographs by photographer Carleton E. Watkins, dating from the 1860s to about the 1880s, that chiefly depict buildings, points of interest, and locales in Northern and Southern California. The collection includes 1 stereograph from the Central Pacific Railroad series; 5 stereographs from Watkins' Pacific Railroad Series; 110 stereographs from Watkins' Pacific Coast series; and 150 stereographs from Watkins' New Series. The Watkins' Pacific Coast Series, created between 1861 and 1874, primarily depict locales in Northern California with many images of buildings in San Francisco, views of Yosemite and Mariposa County, Missions, and some mining operations including photographs of the North Bloomfield Gravel Mining Company in Nevada County, California. The Watkins' New Series stereographs, created between 1874 and 1890, consist of images of both Southern California and Northern California, in cities including San Francisco, Pasadena, San Marino, Sierra Madre, and San Gabriel. Among the Southern California residences and properties depicted include the Sunny Slope Ranch of L.J. Rose in San Gabriel, Willow Dale owned by N.C. Carter, and Lake Vineyard owned by B.D. Wilson. Some of the stereographs in Watkins' Pacific Coast Series include titles in the margins in Watkins' own hand (see Nos. 1033, 1135, 1146, 1153, and 1721). Numbered captions with printed titles appear on many of the mounts; unnumbered mounts are numbered consecutively within the series beginning at 1. Item titles chiefly transcribed from printed titles in stereograph margin; cataloger devised titles are enclosed in square brackets.

The photographs are chiefly by American photographers or publishing companies, and feature a variety of subjects, mostly in the United States. Photographers or publishers include: E. & H. T. Anthony & Co., Philip Brigandi, William H. Fletcher, William M. Godfrey, Hayward & Muzzall, Thomas Houseworth & Co., Benjamin West Kilburn, T. G. Norton, Joseph C. Parker, Henry T. Payne, Payne, Stanton & Co., Edward W. Pierce, M. Reider, A. B. Post, F. H. Rogers & Co., O. E. Tyler, Underwood & Underwood, A. C. Varela, and many others. Southern California Regional Planning Collection, (bulk 1920-1989)

Rare Books

The Southern California Regional Planning Collection was donated by the Los Angeles County Regional Planning Department, George Marr, Edward Holden, Glen Blossom, Simon Eisner, and Glenda Hamilton to the Huntington Library in 1997. The Southern California Regional Planning Collection is organized into two series: 1) Published Planning Reports Series (organized by individual item numbers) 2) Internal Documents Series (organized by box and folder numbers).The Published Planning Reports Series contains 1,913 individual items that were generated by the Los Angeles County Regional Planning Commission, Los Angeles County Department of Regional Planning, and other planning agencies and organizations in Southern California. Type of reports include annual reports, area study, comprehensive planning reports, census, conference papers, general plans, guides to zoning and subdivision, planning proposals, traffic and environmental surveys, zoning ordinance, etc. The date range of this series is 1909 to 2003.The Internal Documents Series contains approximately 913 items in 14 Hollinger boxes. Similar to the Published Planning Reports Series, the majority of the documents were generated by the Los Angeles County Regional Planning Commission and Department of Regional Planning, followed by the Los Angeles Department of City Planning. Type of documents include census reports, conference papers, maps, memorandums, minutes, photos, plans, reports, speeches, summaries, etc. The date range is 1924 to 2000.

A collection of approximately 1,500 photographs and various ephemera and publications of California missions, collected by Southern California educator Connie Rothstein, with an emphasis on the San Gabriel Mission, the history of the city of San Gabriel, and the production of "The Mission Play" by John Steven McGroarty. The collection also includes late-19th and early-20th century photographs of Los Angeles and Southern California, and postcards and ephemera related to the Southern California region. Notable in the collection are 391 stereographs of missions and Los Angeles, including some by photographers William Godfrey and H. T. Payne, A. C. Varela, and Carleton Watkins. All of the California Missions are represented in the collection, plus the "sub-missions" or Asistencias of California. The mission photographs include many unusual views and details, and are a mixture of snapshots made by tourists and commercial photographs. There are many views in and around Southern California, most dating from 1880s-1920s, by various photographers. Specific topics emphasized in and around Los Angeles are: Olvera Street, Chinatown, La Fiesta de Los Angeles celebration; and the Mount Lowe Railway. There are many cabinet cards and stereographs, and six large panoramic photographs of the Los Angeles area. The ephemera include hundreds of postcards and photographic postcards, scrapbooks, and many small publications on the history of the missions and California, as well as ephemera related to "The Mission Play." Other topics in the collection are: photographs and ephemera of Monterey, California; Oregon and the Columbia River Highway; and a group of photographs of cowboys and Western culture (mid-20th century).
