Description: A collection of 56 black and white snapshot photographs mounted on pages of a photograph album. The photographs depict people, activities, and scenery on the islands of Kaua'i and O'ahu, Hawai'i in approximately 1910. The photographs include Native Hawaiians and a thatched building, Chinese and Japanese laborers, and agriculture such as rice fields, sugarcane, and a pineapple plantation. Nearly all of the photographs are labeled with handwritten captions. One caption refers to the visitors camping in the mountains of Kaua'i at "Mr. Gay's" during Halley's Comet. Images of Honolulu include Diamond Head, Pearl Harbor, Iolani Palace, and Waikiki. There are also group photographs of travelers onboard the SS Mongolia and SS Wilhelmina traveling from "San Francisco to Honolulu." One album page has two photographs of the "Grizzly Giant" tree in Yosemite Valley, California.

Hotoku Inafuku photograph album

Visual Materials

This photograph album documents the Inafuku family's life in Hawai'i. The album was presumably compiled by Hotoku Inafuku, who took many of the photographs as well as wrote the captions in the album. The photographs depict Hotoku, his wife Lillian, their children, extended family, and friends. Hotoku and Lillian seem to have three or four children whose names might be Hide, Donald "Yoshio", Caroline, and Lorraine. The photographs depict family portraits, social activities, school related meetings and activities, scenic views around Hawai'i, sugarcane and pineapple fields, and views of the family's garden and numerous orchid plants. Hawaiian locations across multiple islands are represented and include but are not limited to Honolulu, Panalu'u Valley, Kahuku, L+huʻe, Waimea, Mauna Kea, Hilo, Kekaha, Hα'ena. Additionally, there are a few images captured in Osaka and Nago, Japan. Also included are four images of newspaper pages from 1941 announcing Japan's entry into World War II. The album contains 387 photographs and photographic postcards.

Photograph album of United States naval activities in Hong Kong, Japan, Philippines, and United States

This photo album was compiled by a member of the United States Navy who was aboard the USS Wisconsin between 1902 and 1904. The 48 black-and-white photographs are accompanied by extensive handwritten descriptions. The photos depict American, British, and Japanese military ships. The U.S. Naval ships include the USS Adams, the USS Kentucky, the USS Oregon, and the USS Wisconsin. The locations represented in the photographs include San Diego, California; Yokosuka, Japan; Yokohama, Japan; Hong Kong; Honolulu, Hawaii; and Manila, Philippines. The photographs depict views of military boats and crew, shipping docks, a few views of churches and street scenes, and the Queen's Palace in Honolulu.

Dorothy O'Dell Philippines photograph album

Visual Materials

This album contains photographs compiled by Dorothy O'Dell, who resided in the Cavite province of the Philippines during her husband's service in the U.S. Navy. The images depict the couple's travel in England, India, Jerusalem, Panama, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, and Vietnam, capturing specific sites such as Mount Ebal, the "Gateway to Ancient Shechem," Sebastia (Palestine), the "Ancient Castle Thunton" (Taunton Castle, England), Windsor Castle (England), Edinburgh Castle (Scotland), Heidelberg Castle (Germany), the "Hindu Temple" (Meenakshi Amman Temple) and the "Lake Temple" (Vandiyur Mariamman Temple) in Madurai, India. The photographs also document their residence in O'ahu, Hawai'i and Dorothy's evacuation from the Philippines and return to the United States via the S.S. Washington to San Francisco, California. However, many of the images capture Philippine landmarks in Manila, some of which were later damaged or destroyed by the Japanese in World War II. These landmarks include the Jai Alai Building, Puerta de Parián, and Nuestra Señora de la Paz y Buen Viaje cathedral in Antipolo. There are also photographs of the Chinese Yu Tan and Paco cemeteries in Manila, the Taal Volcano, images of Igorot dancers in ceremonial dress performing for Navy personnel, an Igorot person in traditional clothing in Northern Luzon, Filipino funeral processions, street scenes capturing Filipino citizens in their daily activities, livestock, and the O'Dell home on "Radio Road" or Salamanca Drive.The depictions of daily life in pre-war Philippines in and around the naval base are described through written notes by Dorothy on the album pages. Two cabinet card portraits produced by the B.D. Garduno Studio are also included in the album along with photographs of American naval ships and military personnel. The leather album cover is embossed with two Chinese dragons with an emblazoned sphere between them and a Chinese Junk ship below. A few of the album pages appear to have missing photographs.

Honolulu Garden Club photograph

Manuscripts

Financial documents related to the Bernice Pauahi Bishop Musuem, the B.P. Bishop estate, and Puakea Ranch, all of which employed Joseph Oliver Carter during his career in Hawaii. There are also some early accounting materials from the 1840s, including records of invoices for Charles Brewer and R.W. Wood. Family photographs include a portrait of Carter and several album pages containing photographs of Carter and Babbit family members and homes. The photographs are primarily of children, including Elizabeth Babbit Spelman as a baby, and a few depict Joseph Oliver Carter with children and are labeled Great-Grandfather Carter. A few photographs depict Asian women labeled as maids. There is also a 1931 group photograph of the Honolulu Garden Club, and a copy of the Honolulu Star Bulletin extra edition front page from December 7, 1941, describing the aftermath of the attack on Pearl Harbor.
