F. C. Thompson photograph album
Visual Materials
An album of photographs taken by American businessman F. C. Thompson, documenting his time living in Yokohama, Japan, from 1920 to 1921. Thompson managed the Dollar Steamship Lines office in Yokohama, and is seen experiencing some local customs and socializing mostly with other Western men and women, who are identified in handwritten captions. They are seen at various locations including the Grand Hotel, the Oriental Palace Hotel, the Yacht and Rowing Club, and visiting nearby rural areas. Many images depict street scenes, architecture and people in Japan, including scenes of female laborers, agricultural crops and workers, and "elite" women traveling in hand-carried slings. Thompson is seen joining a Japanese motorcycle club, at a rugby match, and on vacation in the countryside in a traditional Japanese house. Some images depict the ships and crews of the Dollar Steamship Lines and Pacific Mail Steamship Company (which would eventually merge into one company). The photographs are accompanied by detailed captions identifying locations.

W. C. White photograph album of road trip through Mexico City
Visual Materials
Photographs of an early automobile tour of Mexico City and vicinity, taken in April, 1906, approximately four years before the upheaval of the Mexican Revolution. The traveler, most likely an American, photographed his automobile in many locations, often where burros or horse wagons are mostly seen on the road. A woman is seen in the passenger seat sometimes, and possibly another car is part of the touring group. Images include stops at historic buildings, landmarks, street scenes, and the "Noche Triste Tree" in Mexico City; old Spanish architecture in Lerma; and travel through the countryside to Toluca. Local residents appear throughout, including men gathering water at a cistern, a woman washing clothes outside her house, and people at a Mexican National Railway train station. There are three images identified as "General Gonzales, Governor of the State of Mexico," riding in a car with other officials. Handwriting inside the album's cover identifies it as "W. C. White's pictures - Mexican trip, April 1906," and there are detailed captions throughout.

Howard C. Armington photograph album of civil engineering projects in Colorado and California
Visual Materials
A photograph album compiled by civil and mining engineer Howard C. Armington (1884-1966), documenting his work on early-20th century electrification and water projects in Colorado, and mining efforts and railroad construction in California. The album begins with Armington as a student at the Colorado School of Mines (1906 to 1907), followed by images of his work with the Central Colorado Power Company building the powerhouse and dam of the Shoshone Hydroelectric Plant Complex (1908 to 1909). Next are images of concrete pipes being laid at Nederland, Colorado, for what is now known as Barker Dam and Reservoir and the Kossler Reservoir. These are followed by images of cement production at the Western Cement Products Company in Pueblo, Colorado, featuring a crusher, furnace, curing sheds, and brick machines. The California portion of the album begins with images from 1911, when Armington became an engineer at Tumco, Imperial Valley, one of the earliest gold mining areas in California. There are about 40 images of mining operations, workers including possibly Mexican or Native American men, and overall views of the mining settlement. A group of more than 75 photographs illustrate work on the Big Creek Railroad (1912), built to transport men and supplies to the Big Creek Hydroelectric dam site for the Pacific Light and Power Company (later Southern California Edison Company). Images also show construction of the dam at Big Creek, and projects called Sierra Power and Kern River Canal (1913). The album also includes personal photographs of family and friends, including Armington's wife, Nona Ross Black. Additionally, there are four loose photographs: bird's-eye-views of the Colorado School of Mines, 1904, and a large group portrait of the graduating class of 1907, with a summary of Armington's career written on the back.
