Description: A group of 53 photographs, 5 x 7 inches or smaller, documenting a Filipino family's life and their connection to teachers at Guiguinto Elementary School in Bulacan, Philippines. Many of the photographs feature a woman who appears to be named Mrs. Balgos, who was a teacher at the school. Photographs include teachers socializing; the Bulacan High School class photographs of 1948 and 1949; Boy Scouts with their teacher; children; family studio portraits and snapshots; and a 1957 wedding party. There are two color snapshots, 1973 and 1978.

Philippine American War photograph albums

Visual Materials

Four photograph albums containing a total of 218 images (chiefly 4.5 x 6.5 inches) of the Philippine American War, taken by an unidentified photographer most likely associated with the 19th U.S. infantry stationed in Cebu, Philippines. Primarily in Cebu with some in San Nicolas and elsewhere, the images document Filipino life and culture as well as U.S. soldiers in military activities and recreation. Three photographs depict the refueling of a hospital ship in Hong Kong, and there are also images of the recruitment of Indigenous soldiers in Puerto Rico, and rare views of the surrenders of Filipino generals Mateo Noriel Luga and Aguedo del Rosario. The photographs are captioned and numbered continuously throughout the four albums. The first album, images 1 to 54, contains mostly detailed panoramas (3.5 x 12 inches) of Cebu and its port, plaza, and bay. The second album, images 55 to 109, contains a range of subjects including the 19th Infantry band baseball team, Filipino homes and families, elaborate Holy Day celebrations in San Nicolas, and several photographs of insurgents and their surrenders. The third album, images 111 to 165, includes church interiors, street and market scenes, and a family identified as "Spaniard and Filipino Mixed Family." The fourth album, images 166 to 218, includes several scenes from the 19th Infantry's training in Michigan, prior to their arrival in the Philippines; interior shots of Colonel Edward J. McClernand's home; a church procession in the streets of Cebu; and the deportation of prisoners to Guam. Some writing in the album reflects racist views toward Filipino and Chinese people.

Stereograph depicting 15 Filipina schoolgirls and a white teacher in a group portrait taken in front of their brick school building in the Malate district of Manila. The printed title on the card says: "49. Girls' School at Malate. American teacher and native girls. P. I." The card has the imprint of Universal Photo Art Co., Philadelphia, C. H. Graves, publisher, and a 1902 copyright date.

Visual Materials

A disbound album with suede covers containing several studio portraits of women and some snapshots of children and family groups, mostly unidentified. The majority of photographs date from the early 1900s, with a few photographs at the back dating to the 1940s or 1950s (two are dated 1954). The unidentified compiler of the album most likely attended Girls' High School, San Francisco, as there are two portraits of women with captions: "Alice Marchebout, Latin teacher, G.H.S. 1902" and one unnamed female "Greek teacher. G.H.S." (Marchebout is listed as a teacher at Girls' High School in the 1900 San Francisco City Directory.) There are two portraits by professional photographers based in San Francisco: William E. Dassonville and George F. Kelly.

Jesse Lee Home boarding school photograph album

Visual Materials

An album featuring photographs of the Jesse Lee Home, a residential Methodist mission school for displaced children, mainly Alaskan Natives from the Seward Peninsula and the Aleutian Islands. Residents included those orphaned by the Spanish Flu pandemic, which hit Native communities particularly hard, and those whose parents were in tuberculosis sanatoria. The home opened in Unalaska in 1890 and moved to Seward in 1924; this album depicts the very early years of the home's operation in Seward, including buildings and group photos of teachers and Native students, both boys and girls. The photographs are uncaptioned, but four individuals have been identified from other sources: Anna Gould, an Aleut woman who served as cooking instructor and domestic helper at the school; Ethel Ard, dormitory matron and deaconess of the Methodist church; "Mr. Love," an industrial arts teacher who passed away in 1927; and Lura Olson, assistant to the girl's dormitory matron.

Mary Louise Ainsworth photograph album of Conrad Aiken's summer school

Visual Materials

An album of snapshot photographs of writer Conrad Aiken, his wife Mary (Hoover) Aiken, and visitors at their house "Forty-Nine Doors" in Brewster, Cape Cod, Massachusetts. The Aikens held a summer writing and painting school at their house, and these were most likely the participants in 1941. Images include people socializing, painting at the beach, the house exterior, and garden. Handwritten notes titled "Summer '41" identify people in the photographs: Conrad and Mary Aiken, Mary Louise Ainsworth, Miriam Coletti, Charles Hamilton, Paul Bishop, Rosamond Pierce, and Paul Metcalf.
