Unidentified family photograph album

A commercially produced carte-de-visite photograph album compiled by an unidentified person containing cartes-de-visite, tintype, and cabinet card portraits of men, women, and children. Photographers imprints are from the East Coast including Massachusetts, New York, and Connecticut. There are also five additional loose card photographs: a portrait of United States President James A. Garfield, captioned "Our Late President," and one of his wife, Lucretia Garfield by "Pell"; photographs of a family in front of a log-cabin house and a two-story house; and a photograph by S. Marksville of people standing in the front of the C.C. Lass shop, presumably in New York, with an Indian statue on the sidewalk and illustrated newspaper covers displayed in the windows.

This grouping has a series of photographs of the first telephone instruments which, Johnston explains on an index card, were made for Mrs. Bell. There are prints of the Francis E. Spinner Statue, a painting depicting Prince Edward of Wales at the Tomb of [George] Washington, and a group portrait of the survivors of the Johnstown Disaster.

This volume contains 146 British satirical prints, dating from 1760-1790, which are either etched or engraved and pasted onto pages in general chronological order. Many of the prints are annotated with handwritten identifications, descriptions, dates, and reference numbers from the British Museum Catalogue of Political and Personal Satires (BM numbers) in an unidentified hand. Ten of the prints have hand coloring (see pp. 16, 49, 57, 61, 67, 69, 76, 84, 110, and 116). The prints reflect a variety of political topics including the influence of Lord Bute (John Stuart); the 1763 Peace of Paris at the end of the Seven Years' War (French and Indian War); the American Stamp Act; the 1783 Fox-North Coalition; the 1784 Westminster election; and the Warren Hastings trial. Some of the depicted individuals include King George III; Prince William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland; Princess Augusta; Charles James Fox; Warren Hastings; William Murray, Earl of Mansfield; Frederick North, 2nd Earl of Guilford; Fletcher Norton; William Pitt, 1st Earl of Chatham; John Russell, Duke of Bedford; John Stuart, 3rd Earl of Bute; John Wilkes; and Cecil Wray. Many artists, engravers, and printers are represented including artists Thomas Rowlandson and William Hogarth and publishers E. Darchery, S. W. Fores, H. Humphrey, and W. Humphrey. One print, "A Foreign Tree" (page 116), is dated as 1789, but appears to be from 1793-4 during the French "Reign of Terror." There are also two pages containing handwritten descriptions of events (pp. 8a, 87).

A disbound album with suede covers containing several studio portraits of women and some snapshots of children and family groups, mostly unidentified. The majority of photographs date from the early 1900s, with a few photographs at the back dating to the 1940s or 1950s (two are dated 1954). The unidentified compiler of the album most likely attended Girls' High School, San Francisco, as there are two portraits of women with captions: "Alice Marchebout, Latin teacher, G.H.S. 1902" and one unnamed female "Greek teacher. G.H.S." (Marchebout is listed as a teacher at Girls' High School in the 1900 San Francisco City Directory.) There are two portraits by professional photographers based in San Francisco: William E. Dassonville and George F. Kelly.

Manuscripts
The Photographs and photograph albums series includes images of Henry E. Huntington, Arabella Huntington, Collis P. Huntington, and other members of the Huntington, Metcalf, and Holladay families. The photographs include both formal portraits and candid views. Several of the Metcalf family photograph albums document family trips. Images of Henry E. Huntington also appear outside his own sub-series and are noted in the finding aid. Other subjects include the Patton family; the Shorb ranch and house; Max Farrand; William Hertrich; Grenville M. Dodge; William E. Dunn; William F. Herrin; and Sir Joseph Duveen. The series also includes copies of original photographs not held by The Huntington. The series also contains several cased images, such as daguerreotypes and tintypes, of unidentified people; many are fragile and missing their covers. The Henry E. Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens sub-series includes photographs of the San Marino ranch and gardens, the construction of Huntington's residence, and works in the Art Gallery. The series also includes two undated albums of photographs of the grounds and buildings taken by American photographer Edward S. Curtis.

Thomas Nast family photograph album
Visual Materials
Studio portraits of German-American cartoonist Thomas Nast, his wife Sarah Edwards Nast, and their five children, Julia, Thomas Jr., Edith, Mabel, and Cyril. There are 3 portraits of Nast, including a 3/4-length standing portrait in a fur-trimmed coat, and 6 portraits of Sarah at various ages. The children are pictured from childhood to adulthood, except the youngest, Cyril, who is only seen as a boy. The portraits were primarily made by photographers E. G. Lacey and Mrs. E. G. Lacey in Morristown, New Jersey, and Napoleon Sarony in New York City. There are a few unidentified photographs of children, including two tintypes of a baby, and a copy photograph of a man posed with a beer tankard. A few photographs have dates handwritten on the backs.
