  A collection of 33 photographs pasted on album pages, mostly of the American West, with a few views of Heidelberg Castle in Germany and other locations. Many of the photographs are commercial views including several images of the Del Monte Hotel in Monterey, California, taken by the hotel's official photographer C.W.J. Johnson; views of the missions in Carmel, San Juan Capistrano, and San Gabriel, California, taken by C.C. Pierce; and views of Mount Hood and the Hood River in Oregon. There are also a few images of Los Angeles, two photographs of the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Illinois, in 1893, by C.D. Arnold, as well as views of unidentified tropical locales, and one loose snapshot of four Indian girls, captioned "scholarship girls in Aruppukottai boarding school" in India (Item 26).

  Set of twenty-six miscellaneous commercial views of sights chiefly in Southern California, circa 1890s. Includes a few images each of a variety of locales including the Arroyo Seco in Pasadena, parks including Hollenbeck Park in Los Angeles, railroad tracks, the cabin of Gus Knight Jr. in Bear Valley in the San Bernardino Mountains, with Knight and others sitting on the porch. Most of the photographs have identifying captions in pencil on the versos. The photographer is unidentified.

  This collection contains 430 albumen photographs by photographer Carleton E. Watkins that chiefly depict buildings, points of interest, and locales in Northern and Southern California in the 1870s and 1880s, as well as 223 card photographs by photographer Alfred A. Hart documenting the construction of the western half of the transcontinental railroad by the Central Pacific Railroad (CPRR) in the 1860s, which were later published by Watkins under his own imprint. Images by Watkins depict locations in Arizona and California including: Lake Tahoe, Los Angeles, the Mammoth Tree Grove, Paso Robles, San Bernardino, San Diego, San Gabriel, San Luis Obispo, San Pedro, Santa Monica, Soda Springs, Wilmington, and Yosemite, as well as views related to the Southern Pacific Railroad and of the Colorado River. There are a few images of Native Americans in Arizona and California, and several images related to trains and railroads. The photographs have been removed from the original album, which is a large leather album with brass bindings (Box 10). There are some handwritten identifications in the album pages, most likely written after if was received by the Library.

  157. Railroad West from Fort Point, 76 miles

  This collection contains 372 stereographic photographs (including some variants and duplicates) by photographer A. A. Hart that document the construction of the western half of first transcontinental railroad by the Central Pacific Railroad between 1864 and 1869. The collection includes all but seven of the original series, numbered from 1 to 364 by Hart (lacking 193, 323, 333, 358, 359, 362, and 364). The images chronicle the advancement of the railroad over 742 miles in California and the Sierra Nevada Mountains, Nevada, and Utah. The majority of the photographs are views of mountains, lakes, rivers, and forested areas (some with stumps from clear-cutting in the foreground), often with railroad tracks running through the center of the images. In addition, there are also images of locomotives, Chinese and other workers, equipment, bridges, tunnels, frontier and mining towns, construction camps, as well as some images of Native Americans, including Paiute and Shoshone Indians. The stereographs primarily contain Hart's own Sacramento imprint with series titles including: "Scenes in the Sierra Nevada Mountains"; "Scenes in the Valley of the Sacramento"; "Scenes in the Washoe Range"; "Scenes on the Humboldt River"; and "Scenes near Great Salt Lake". Interspersed in the collection are stereographs published without credit to Hart by Frank Durgan and Carleton E. Watkins.

  Miscellaneous California scenes

  The Peabody Collection consists of 672 glass plate negatives in various sizes, 1054 film negatives in various sizes, 24 photograph albums, 887 loose photographs in a variety of formats, published works, and manuscript material, created and collected by Henry G. Peabody, 1859-1993 (bulk 1890s-1900s). The materials collectively describe Peabody's long career as a commercial landscape photographer working on both the east and west coasts of the United States. The photographs and negatives depict Peabody and his family; landscape views in New England, Canada, the western United States, California, and Mexico; Native Americans; city and landscape views in Great Britain, France, and Switzerland; portraits; architectural renderings; plants and animals; unidentified landscapes; and miscellaneous images. Additional photographers and photographic firms represented in the collection include Alexander Hesler, Charles F. Lummis, and Spence Air Photos. The published works contain photographs by Peabody. The manuscript material provides information about Peabody's negatives; contains catalogs of Peabody's works for sale; describes Peabody's commercial dealings as both a photographer and seller of photographic equipment; and contains ephemeral material collected by Peabody throughout his life.

  Album of photographs of the American West, especially California and Colorado

  Visual Materials

  An album with 38 commercial photographs of the western United States, focusing especially on California and Colorado. Views of California show Los Angeles, Avalon on Santa Catalina Island, Pasadena, San Francisco, the Mount Lowe Railway, Santa Monica, San Diego, Long Beach, San Joaquin Valley, Santa Anita, the Hotel del Coronado, and San Diego Bay. Images of Colorado show Pike's Peak, the Garden of the Gods, Mountain of the Holy Cross, Curecanti Needle and the Black Canyon of the Gunnison, the Grand Canyon of the Colorado, and a high bridge near Georgetown. Other places that appear briefly in the album are Yellowstone National Park; Portland, Oregon; and ice floes in the Northern Pacific Ocean. Many of the photographs of California are by Best & Co, some are by I. W. Taber, and a view of the Hotel del Coronado is by Judd Photo (Item 22).
