Two disbound photograph albums containing 138 commercial photographs of Europe, circa 1880s (volume 1), and 40 photographs of Southern California and the American West, circa 1890s (volume 2). Volume 1 consists of commercial photographs of European tourist scenes including landmarks, monuments, cathedrals, historic buildings, and landscapes chiefly in Germany, Austria, France, and England. There are also two loose photographs of Moscow, Russia, stamped "B. Avanzo, Moscou" on the verso. The photographs are various sizes and primarily black-and-white, though there are some colored images. Volume 2 consists of commercial images of locations in the American West, particularly Southern California and San Diego, as well as a few views of Coronado, Ontario, Santa Barbara, Utah, and Arizona, and images associated with railroads, including the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad. Images primarily include elevated views of towns, landscapes, railroad bridges and tracks, as well as a photograph of the Alexander Mitchell, a Wisconsin steamboat. Images in volume 2 are chiefly about 11.5 x 18.5 cm. Most photographers are unidentified though two photographs are labeled Parker Photo and Turner & Judd. Included in the first volume is a handwritten list of some of the railroad views on 1890s letterhead of the St. Aloysius Conference of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, Chicago, Illinois.

This is a collection primarily of negatives and photographic prints depicting the growth of Santa Monica and Los Angeles, California, from 1860s to 1980s. Many views are cityscapes or street views, showing buildings, storefronts, homes and roads, and documenting the use of railroads, trolleys, streetcars, and automobiles. There are many card photographs by early professional photographers, and also a number of snapshots made by amateurs, some in personal photo albums. The collection's scope also includes early views of many other communities in Southern California (and a few in other states); the beginnings of aviation in Santa Monica, including the first Douglas Aircraft Company buildings; a photo album of residents in Topanga Canyon, ca. 1913; automobile racing in Los Angeles and Santa Monica, 1920s; maritime views; a photo album of U.S. troops in France during World War I; a 1949 real estate development in Apple Valley, California, and others. Besides photographs, a portion of the collection consists of scarce publications and historical ephemera, primarily related to Santa Monica and Los Angeles, including brochures, advertising cards, menus, event programs and other materials. Highlights of the Santa Monica images are aerial views of the buildings along the coast and pier (1920s); several views of the Arcadia Hotel (1880s); the Long Wharf and adjoining railroad and train depot; the first bath houses on the beach; the beach club culture of the 1920s and 1930s; the amusement piers of Santa Monica, Ocean Park and Venice; and the beginnings of the Douglas Aircraft Company. There is a large set of promotional photographs made late 1920s-1930s by Powell Press Service depicting people enjoying Santa Monica's beaches, clubs and outdoor recreation. An important subset within the collection is 407 negatives made ca. 1890 - 1908 by Los Angeles historian and amateur photographer George W. Hazard (1842-1914). Hazard travelled around Los Angeles and vicinity photographing the adobes, houses, streets and storefronts that told the early history of the city. Many of Hazard's negatives have handwritten identifications, naming streets, former homeowners, ranchos, and other historical details. There are a large number of cabinet cards and other card-mounted prints and stereographs. There are 1,264 stereograph prints, highlighted by the works of photographic pioneers William M. Godfrey, Francis Parker, Hayward & Muzzall, and Carleton Watkins. Other formats represented are: glass and film negatives; panoramic prints; 7 photograph albums, photographic postcards, 20th-century color prints and transparencies; and a small number of tintypes, cyanotypes and a set of chromolithographs.

An album with 58 commercial photographs of various scenic locations in the American West and New York, chiefly containing 1-2 images per page. Locations consist of: Colorado (pages 1-8); Utah (pages 9-11); California including Lake Tahoe (page 12), San Francisco including Chinatown (page 13); Oakland (page 14), Berkeley (page 15), the Hotel Del Monte in Monterey, California (page 16); Geyser Canyon in Sonoma County (page 17), Yosemite (pages 19-27), and Mariposa Grove (pages 28-29); the mountains of Mount Shasta and Mount Tacoma (page 30) and Mount Hood (page 31); Yellowstone (pages 32-40); and Mohonk Lake, New York (pages 41-46). Views of Yosemite show El Capitan, Cathedral Spires, Royal Arches, Mirror Lake, Bridal Veil Falls, Vernal Falls, Nevada Falls, and Glacier Point. Views of Yellowstone show Mammoth Springs Hotel, Minerva Terrace, Golden Gate Canyon, Obsidian Cliffs, Hell's Half Acre, Morning Glory Spring, Old Faithful, Splendid Geyser, Sulphur Mountain, Lower Falls, Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, and the Grand Canyon Hotel. Views in Colorado include Manitou Springs, the Garden of the Gods, Denver, Georgetown, Curecanti Needle, and the Royal Gorge of the Arkansas. Most of the Utah photographs are the work of C. R. Savage, some of the Colorado photographs are by William Henry Jackson, some of the Yellowstone photographs are by F. Jay Haynes, the Oregon photographs are by Isaac Grundy Davidson, the Tahoe Photographs are by R. J. Waters, and most of the rest are by I. W. Taber.

The Peabody Collection consists of 672 glass plate negatives in various sizes, 1054 film negatives in various sizes, 24 photograph albums, 887 loose photographs in a variety of formats, published works, and manuscript material, created and collected by Henry G. Peabody, 1859-1993 (bulk 1890s-1900s). The materials collectively describe Peabody's long career as a commercial landscape photographer working on both the east and west coasts of the United States. The photographs and negatives depict Peabody and his family; landscape views in New England, Canada, the western United States, California, and Mexico; Native Americans; city and landscape views in Great Britain, France, and Switzerland; portraits; architectural renderings; plants and animals; unidentified landscapes; and miscellaneous images. Additional photographers and photographic firms represented in the collection include Alexander Hesler, Charles F. Lummis, and Spence Air Photos. The published works contain photographs by Peabody. The manuscript material provides information about Peabody's negatives; contains catalogs of Peabody's works for sale; describes Peabody's commercial dealings as both a photographer and seller of photographic equipment; and contains ephemeral material collected by Peabody throughout his life.
