Photograph Album of California and the Pacific Coast

    Visual Materials

This album contains typical commercial photographs of the towns and scenery of California, Oregon and Washington dating from the 1890s. Of note are early views of San Diego, Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, San Francisco, Tacoma, and Seattle. There are also views of California missions and coastal landscapes. The Oregon photographs are of scenery only. Photographs of California include San Diego; Casa de Estudillo in Old Town San Diego; Mission San Luis Rey, San Juan Capistrano, and Santa Barbara; Santa Barbara; San Luis Obispo; Confederate general James Longstreet's Los Angeles home; the Bellevue Terrace Hotel; various Los Angeles homes; Pasadena; Elias Jackson "Lucky" Baldwin's Santa Anita ranch; San Francisco city scenes; and wilderness en route to Oregon. Oregon photographs show images of the Columbia River; Mt. Hood; Latourell Falls; Multnomah Falls; and nature scenes. Photographs of Washington state include Tacoma; Green River; Native Americans from an unidentified tribe; Seattle; and a portrait of Angeline, daughter of Chief Seattle of the Suquamish tribe. Twenty-six of the pictures in this album were photographed by Isaiah West Taber and twenty-two were photographed by W.H.J. and Company. It may be that William H. Jeffers created those twenty-two photographs, as he was active in California during this time period. Other photographers who contributed to this album include Thomas H. Rutter, Charles B. Talbot, and Boyd & Braas (William F. Boyd and George H. Braas). The album spine is embossed with the title "California and Pacific Coast" and the photographs are mostly mounted double-sided. The initials of an unknown individual, "E.B.R.", and the year 1897 are also embossed on the album's spine.

Photographs of Edward Schieffelin's Prospecting Trip in Alaska

    Visual Materials

This album contains 45 photographs taken by Charles O. Farciot that document Edward Schieffelin's gold prospecting trip through Alaska via the Yukon River in 1882 and 1883. Views include many close portraits of Alaskan natives and their families; the towns of St. Michael, Nuklukayet, and Anvik; Fort Yukon; Fort Reliance; trading posts; Schieffelin and his dog sled team; and Fort Yukon missionaries interacting with Alaskan natives; various steamships, including the "New Racket"; the Yukon River; Alaskan native chieftains and shamans; a group of the only Caucasian men in St. Michael; and one view of an Inuit cemetery. The photographs are mounted double-sided into an accordion fold book album. There are typeset captions, probably created by photographer Charles Farciot. Some refer to photographic exposure and timing.

The albumen prints are approximately 10 x 12 1/2 inches, mounted on boards, with a few small, amateur photographs pasted on backs of some boards. The album begins with views of City Point by William Hathaway, including General U.S. Grant's headquarters and other barracks, and civilian men and women aboard a steamboat. Views in Richmond depict Libby Prison, building ruins, and Jefferson Davis' residence. Other subjects are: Lookout Mountain, Tennessee; soldiers and officers; an army camp at Scottstown, Alabama; an army bridge created from boats at Fredericksburg, Virginia (1862); U.S. Colored Troops standing in formation at Camp William Penn, Philadelphia (approximately 1863); Citizens' Volunteer Hospital; and a group of Black and white children, men, and women at "Scott House, opposite Fredericksburg." There are two photographs of illustrations by Civil War artist James E. Taylor depicting the Battle of Vermillion Bayou and Custer's charge through a Cheyenne village, Wyoming (1868). The album is disbound, and four photographs have been matted and housed in Box 2.
