    Albums of European views

    Visual Materials

Two albums of commercial photographs from Europe, especially Spain, Italy, England, Switzerland, and France. The first album includes photographs of Granada, focusing on the Alhambra, city streets, and ancient and modern buildings. Some of the images have been amateurishly hand-tinted, and several bear the mark of Linares fotografo. Photographs of the French Riviera by "ND Phot" show Nice, Menton, La Turbie, and Monaco, with special attention shown to Monte Carlo and the Casino there. Photographs of Naples, some by Alinari and some by Sommer, show street scenes, portraits of locals, a funeral, piazzas, and monuments such as Forte S. Elmo and Galleria Umberto I. Other subjects in the first volume in smaller numbers are Genoa, Vesuvius, Pompeii, and Montblanc. The second album begins with photographs of Rome including several photographs of marble sculptures by Cenova and Bernini. Photographs of Florence show palaces, squares, monuments, the Campanile, and the Duomo. The majority of pictures of Lucerne are by Bruno and Arthur Wehrli, known professionally as the Gebrüder Wehrli. A small number of photographs of palaces in France, including Fountainbleau, is followed by views of London. The London photographs are signed variously by "L. S. & P. Co." and "Stereoscopic Co." (which both seem to be the London Stereoscopic and Photographic Company), "G. W. W.", "F. F. & Co.", and "J. V."

Photograph album of California and travels in the West

    Visual Materials

This album comprises over 300 photographs on 142 pages, showing a young couple at home and on travels in Southern California, Arizona, New Mexico, Oregon and Mexico. Notable in the album are views of Southern California Edison power stations and equipment, 1918-1925, (pp. 116 – 135); the Ocean Park Pier fire, 1923 (pp. 69-73); and damage from the Long Beach earthquake, 1933 (pp. 136-143). "G.A.F." is embossed on the cover and there are many views of a man named "G. A. Follette," who is presumably the album compiler and may have been a Southern California Edison employee (see p. 54). Most photographs have handwritten captions, but people are named by first name only, except "Marcel Frenay" (p. 6). Other views include: P.E. Rod & Gun Club rabbit hunt, 1921 (p. 24, 26); Balboa Beach; Newport Beach; caves at La Jolla; Tahquiz Canyon; Mission San Juan Capistrano; Alpine Tavern (Mount Lowe); buffalo grazing at Balboa Park, San Diego; Mt. Rubidoux; San Gabriel Mission; Portland, Oregon; Tijuana, Mexico and a cockfight; cotton harvesting, Imperial Valley; automobile travel and camping; Topanga Canyon landslide (pp. 50-51); flying small airplane over Catalina Island (p. 61); movie set of a medieval castle in Griffith Park (p. 66); "Charles Nelson" ship at sea (p. 13); Spadena House and Willat Studio (a.k.a. Collection of photographic postcards and travel ephemera of the Philippines

    Visual Materials

A collection of 731 photographic postcards and 81 photomechanical or printed postcards of the Philippines, spanning the years of transition from the end of the Spanish colonial government through decades of American administration. Many were sent through the mail to U.S. destinations, including Berkeley, Seattle, Honolulu, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Sioux Falls, as well as to recipients in Hong Kong and Portugal. A number of postcards have handwritten inscriptions, stamps, and printed captions, indicating how they were viewed, circulated, and used for tourism and government propaganda. Postcard imagery covers a variety of subjects in the Philippines, including people and communities, with many Indigenous people represented; agriculture; buildings and houses under construction; social and cultural activities; prisons; street and market scenes; weaving and textile production; religious ceremonies; and landscapes. There are several studio portraits, primarily of women and couples, and several color photomechanical postcards of various scenes. The collection also includes some related photographic prints and tourist guides, pamphlets and maps of the Philippines. Please note that this collection contains historical images and language that library users may find harmful, offensive, or inappropriate.
