Specific locations along the coast capture images of Angel Island, Coronado Beach, Lake Tahoe, Monterey Bay, Point Loma, Port Harford (Port San Luis), San Francisco Bay, and Sausalito Bay. Also included are images of what appear to be an early Chinese community of fisherman mending fishing nets and drying squid along the coast of Monterey Bay, San Francisco's Warner's CobWeb Palace, Don Antonio de Coronel's rancho, Gaviota Pass, and the Stanford University Gates in Palo Alto. Several images are credited to I.N. Cook, the Rhea Bros., E.W. Turner, R.J. Waters, and W.H.J & Co. The majority of the images are albumen but also include gelatin silver prints and carte de visite photographs. Handwritten notes cite "Hardy, 1945" which may refer to the original Grahame Hardy collection acquired in 1945.

    Yachting on San Francisco Bay

    Visual Materials

These lantern slides depict urban, agricultural, and nature scenes of California in the 1870s. The slides acted as a visual accompaniment to real estate developer Charles Victor Hall's traveling lecture promoting California's resources and benefits, aimed to encourage New Englanders and Europeans to relocate to California. This collection is significant in its images of Native Americans in California, mainly in the Yosemite area, and views of prospecting and mining. The majority of the lantern slides depict scenes from northern California, including Yosemite National Park and San Francisco. Some southern California views are also shown, including San Diego and Los Angeles County. Other slides of interest are views of the California ranches of F.P.F. Temple, Ellwood Cooper, F.D. Bacon, Maria Sepulveda, L.J. Rose (and family), and H.H. Moore. Portraits of General John C. Fremont and actress Maude Granger are also featured in the collection. In addition to the lantern slides, three copy negatives depicting the logging industry are also included. The originals are not in this collection. A printing plate with Hall's portrait is also included in this collection. The images were most likely taken by several different photographers, including Carleton Watkins, Eadweard Muybridge, and Bradley & Rulofson.

Hart documenting the construction of the western half of the transcontinental railroad by the Central Pacific Railroad (CPRR) in the 1860s, which were later published by Watkins under his own imprint. Images by Watkins depict locations in Arizona and California including: Lake Tahoe, Los Angeles, the Mammoth Tree Grove, Paso Robles, San Bernardino, San Diego, San Gabriel, San Luis Obispo, San Pedro, Santa Monica, Soda Springs, Wilmington, and Yosemite, as well as views related to the Southern Pacific Railroad and of the Colorado River.
