One painting book entitled The Dutch Boy's Lead Party: A Paint Book for Girls and Boys, by O.C. Harn, published by National Lead Company, copyright 1923. The front cover shows Dutch Boy, carrying his paint bucket, being greeted by a toy lead soldier, a shoe, a plate and a light bulb. The back cover features a hand that has made a broad brush stroke with the admonition "'Save the surface and you save all' Paint & Varnish". The front inside cover contains the copyright information; the back inside cover features a seated Dutch Boy (the Dutch Boy trademark) and locations of company offices in the United States. The first page shows the Dutch Boy talking to the lead soldier; it is followed by 14 images--7 in color and 7 in outline--of items that use lead. Items include a light bulb (lead glass), shoes and baseballs (lead in the rubber), and a bullet (entirely made of lead). Each outlined image was to be filled in using the complementary color image at its side as a guide. Some of the images have been filled in using watercolor. There are four perforated tabs at the end of the book--probably where the Color Harmony in the Home booklet, mentioned on the front cover, would have been included before its removal for use by adults. On the front cover the name "M.C. Wagner" has been stamped.

The Dutch Boy's Jingle Paint Book

One painting book and manufacturer's advertisement by O.C. Harn, entitled The Dutch Boy's Jingle Paint Book, published by National Lead Company, copyright 1921. The front cover shows Dutch Boy, carrying his paint bucket, pointing to the title of the book. The back cover features the Dutch boy trademark. The recto of the first page advises boys and girls to remember the slogan "save the surface and you save all" in order to be better prepared as adults to keep their homes "looking nice and new." The back inside cover has a long explanation "[f]or the Grown-Ups" that the book "is published also in the hope that thru [the children] we will succeed in interesting the grown-ups in surface-saving with Dutch Boy white-lead." The book contains twenty images, of which nine are color and nine are identical outline images. Each outlined image was to be filled in using the complementary color image at its side as a guide. In the center of the book are squares of watercolor with overlays of tissue paper. Some of the images have been filled in using these watercolors, others have been filled in with both watercolor and wax crayon. On the bottom edge of the back inside cover, stamped in purple ink, are the numbers "96448 ORD 1178 21."

The back cover features a hand that has made a broad brush stroke within it is the admonition "'Save the surface and you save all' Paint & Varnish." The front inside cover has the copyright information; the inside back cover bears the Dutch Boy trademark and locations of company offices in the United States. The title page shows the Dutch Boy heading into a book with the following rhyme "Into the stories you have read/ He took his famous Dutch Boy Lead,/ And all the characters were glad/ To greet the Dutch Boy Painter Lad." There are 14 images in the book, 7 in color and 7 in outline, plus the front and back-inside covers, and the title page. Each outlined image was to be filled in using the complementary color image at its side as a guide. Some of the images have been filled in using watercolor. There are four perforated tabs at the end of the book--probably where the Decorative and Protective Painting booklet, mentioned on the front cover, would have been included before its removal for use by adults.

Ideal Paint-Box-Book, with Easy Drawing Lessons for Young Painters

One painting book entitled Ideal Paint-Box-Book, with Easy Drawing Lessons for Young Painters, published by the Ideal Book Builders, Publishers, Chicago, Illinois, ca. 1907. This book-length painting book contains watercolors, a small palette and paintbrush, all of which folds into a box on the inside front cover. Unnumbered pages of both chromolithograph and lithograph images for coloring comprise the rest of the book. Text in the form of rhymes and poetry accompany most images. The front cover is a chromolithograph image of a boy and a girl painting with two such painting books. Within the body of illustrations, there are several containing racial slurs. The last page is a publisher's advertisement for these and similar painting books. Many of the lithograph images have been colored in with the paints provided. "Patented in United States, Nov. 12, 1907" and "Patented in Great Britain, Dec. 10, 1907" are printed at the bottom of the front cover.

Landscape Painting Book

One painting book entitled Landscape Painting Book, published by McLoughlin Bros., New York, copyright 1902. The front cover shows a winter landscape. The title page features a different title (Object Painting Book) than that found on the front cover. The inside front cover reads "a few practical directions for young painters," including how to mix paints. The back inside cover depicts a palette of red, green, yellow, blue and purple; matching paint has been applied to each color by the student. The book contains 8 pages of images, half of which are printed in color, the other half in outline. The outlined images were filled in using the complementary color image as a guide. All of the outlined images have been filled in with watercolors. In the upper-right hand corner of the title page, in pencil, is written "1.00".

One boxed painting set entitled The ‘Little Artist’s' Masterpiece Painting Set: with Quality Paints and Masterpiece Pictures, manufactured by Whitman Publishing Co., ca. 1932. This set is comprised of 8 round cakes of watercolor paint within wooden tubs, two oblong metal dishes, 2 sheets containing 16 color images entitled Famous Paintings to Paint and Color, 4 double-sided sheets, each containing 4 images for painting, and a book of 11 color images entitled Color Reproductions of Ten Famous Paintings: Including Historical Sketches of the Artists and the Pictures, Suitable for Framing. "1932" is written in ms., in pencil, on the verso of the last leaf of this book of reproductions. The images as models are the same as those in the book of reproductions. Some of the images included are: "The Blue Boy" by Gainsborough; "The Helping Hand" by Renouf; "The Sistine Madonna" by Raphael, and "Portrait of George Gisz" by Holbein. One of the images has been partially painted.
