Four drawing books entitled Bartholomew's National System of Industrial Drawing, Free Hand-Tracing, New Edition, Nos. 1, 1, 2 and 3, by William N. Bartholomew, published by 3 different publishers, 1881. The first copy of No. 1 (env. 1) was published by Potter, Knight, Ainsworth & Co. of New York, Boston and Chicago. The second copy of Book 1 (Env. 2) was published by American Book Company of New York, Cincinnati and Chicago. Books 2 and 3 were published by A.S. Barnes & Co. of New York and Chicago. Each of the 4 books is 12 pages in length, and contain 24-29 numbered exercises each. These tracing books are intended for use by "children just beginning to draw". The series is progressive in that the exercises range in complexity from simple to more complex, both within each book and over the series itself. Each lesson builds upon the skills learned in previous lessons. These books contain no text; they are images and drawing exercises to be traced or completed. Many of these exercises are shapes and forms, later used to create decorative patterns and designs. Images of simple buildings are also included. All of the images are two-dimensional. The front covers of each booklet are identical to one another; a simple but decorative line frame surrounds the title. At the bottom is an Egyptian aten symbol. On the back cover of each is a publisher's advertisement for Standard Text Books for drawing, spelling and other subjects. The inside front and back covers within each book contain instructions for use and explain the philosophy of the Bartholomew system. "Mary Lewis" is written in ms., in pencil, at the top of the front cover on Books 1 (env. 2), 2 and 3.

Two drawing books entitled Bartholomew's National System of Industrial Drawing, Free Hand, No. 3 and No. 4, by William N. Bartholomew, published by Potter, Ainsworth & Company, New York and Chicago, 1874. This book is 16 pages in length and contains unnumbered exercises which range from one to three per page. The focus is on outline drawing: "the subjects selected as examples for practice are lines, angles, plane geometrical figures, ornamental forms, and outlines of familiar objects." Some of the exercises include: drinking goblets, a call bell, a candlestick holder and floral and leafy designs and patterns. All of the exercises have been completed by a previous owner. A decorative, horizontally-oriented frame surrounds the title on the front cover: patterns and ornamental designs fill the left-hand panel and a small, square image of an artist's easel and palette is in the upper right-hand corner of the frame. In the two bottom corners of the frame are places for the student to fill in his or her name and school and grade. On the inside of the front cover is an explanation of the Industrial Series itself, as well as some recommendations for materials to be used with this system. Three testimonials for the Bartholomew System from New York newspapers appear on the inside of the back cover. At the end of the testimonials is a list of the books that comprise the Bartholomew National System of Drawing. On the back cover of each is a publisher's advertisement for "Magill's French Series" of language books. Prior ownership: "V.B White" is written in ms., in pencil, in the upper right-hand corner of the front cover. "Viola B. White" is written in ms. in the lower left-hand corner of the front cover in the space labeled "Name"; "Haigh School" is written in ms. in the space labeled "School".

One drawing book entitled Bartholomew's National System of Industrial Drawing, Linear Perspective, New Edition, No. 18, by William N. Bartholomew, published by American Book Company, New York, Cincinnati and Chicago, ca. 1883. This 32-page book contains 133 lithograph illustrations. The first 4 pages include general remarks and directions for drawing perpendicular and parallel lines; the remaining pages contain numbered problems and unnumbered exercises. Each of the problems and exercises are comprised of instructional text, illustrations, and space for drawing. The majority of the exercises require the study and creation of parallel and perpendicular lines in relation to perspective using two and three-dimensional objects and designs. None of the exercises have been completed. The front cover is framed by a simple but decorative border that surrounds the title. An Egyptian aten is below the edition statement, and the publisher's statement is below that. The number of the book is in both the left and right-hand corners of the frame. The insides of the front and back covers are blank. On the back cover is a publisher's advertisement for "Popular Educational Series" of schoolbooks. Eight drawing books entitled American Text Books of Art Education: Free-Hand Drawing, Numbers One-Six, by Walter Smith, published by James R. Osgood & Company, Boston, and also by L. Prang & Company, Boston, 1873-1875. In this particular set there are duplicates of Numbers Two and Six. Numbers One, Two and both copies of Number 6 are published by James R. Osgood & Co.; Numbers Three, Four and Five are published by L. Prang & Company. These books range in length from 14 to 20 pages and contain numbered exercises, several per page. Each exercise consists of explanatory text, an image, and space for copying. The exercises progress in complexity within each book and within the series. Some of the books have been completed by students, others have not. All of the front covers are identical to each other. On the inside of the front cover of each drawing book are directions and instructions for use of the book. The insides of the back covers vary: some contain publisher's advertisements for other books by Walter Smith, others contain definitions of terms and advertisements for drawing models. The back covers also vary in content, but all are publisher's advertisements. Several of these books have additional ms. writing on their front covers: "Nellie B. Kimball" is written in the upper right-hand corner of Number One, and centered on Number Two; it also appears on Numbers Four, Five and Six (envs. 9, 10 and 11); "Lutie W. Tompkins" is written in the upper right-hand corner of the second copy of Number Two (env. 7); "Fred E. Howe" is written along the spine-side of the front cover of Number Three (env. 08); and "Curtis H. Foster" is written along the spine side of the front cover of Number 6 (env. 12).

Two drawing books entitled Bartholomew's National System of Industrial Drawing, Mechanical, New Edition, No. 14 and No. 15, by William N. Bartholomew, published by American Book Company, New York, Cincinnati and Chicago, 1883. Each of these two books is 16 pages in length and contain numbered problems and exercises. Many of the problems and exercises focus on angles and lines for developing precision and accuracy. A sampling of some of the exercises covered are: the quatrefoil, division of lines into equal and proportional parts, construction of ornamental forms- design (all from book 14) and tangent lines and circles, circles inscribed and circumscribed, drawing of joints between stones in the elliptical arch and construction of plans for a building. Each of the problems and exercises are comprised of primarily instructional text with a small image for copying or use as a guide, and ample space in which to work. The front covers are the same with the exception of the book numbers in the upper left and right-hand corners. The title is surrounded by a simple but decorative frame; an Egyptian aten design is beneath the title and edition statement. The publisher information is below the aten. On the inside of the front covers are General Instructions for the use of each book. Both sides of the back covers contain an illustrated glossary, "Definition of terms" that is specific to each book. Six drawing books entitled American Text-Books of Art Education, Revised Edition, Nos. 3-11, by Walter Smith, published by L. Prang & Co., Boston, 1879. The issues included in this group are Nos. 3, 5, 6, 7, 11 and a duplicate of No. 11. Each of these drawing books is 20 pages in length, and contain numbered exercises. Each exercise consists of brief instructional text, a lithograph image, and space for copying. The exercises increase in difficulty as they progress through each book, and also throughout the series. For example, some of the exercises found in No. 3 are simple curved lines, either used alone or in combination to form ornamental and floral designs. Use of both straight and curved lines continues through books 5, 6, and 7, but increase in complexity and difficulty. In Book No. 11, more attention is paid to angles, dimension, shading and proportion for three-dimensional objects and designs. All of the covers are identical; an ornamental frame surrounds the title. The insides of the front covers provide general instructions for use of the books; the insides of the back covers vary: some are blank, and some contain publisher's advertisements. The back covers also vary, some contain additional publisher's advertisements for books and materials within the Smith system, others contain additional directions for use of the series. Some of the books have been completed by previous owners. "Lutie Tompkins" is written in ms., in ink, in the upper right-hand corner of the front cover of No. 5. A paper label made from lined paper is mounted to the front cover of No. 7 and contains the ms. writing: "E. Hinde[?] Principal. Lutie Tompkins. Prov. St., Grade VII." "Lucius Tompkins" is written in ms. along the spine side of the front cover of No. 11 (env. 23), and an additional sheet of original artwork is laid in. Books No. 3 and 5 are smaller than the other books.
