Seven drawing books entitled Bartholomew's National System of Industrial Drawing, Free Hand, New Edition, Nos. 6, 6, 10, 11, 12, 12, 13, by William N. Bartholomew, published by three different publishers, 1881-1882. Nos. 6 (env. 5), 11 (env. 8) and 12 (env. 10) were published by Potter, Ainsworth & Co. of Boston, New York and Chicago. Nos. 6 (env. 6), 10 (env. 7), 13 (env. 11) were published by American Book Company of New York, Cincinnati and Chicago. No. 12 (env. 9) was published by A.S. Barnes & Co. of New York and Chicago. All of the books are 16 pages in length and contain 14-30 numbered exercises. This series progresses from simple, two-dimensional copying and tracing (book no. 6) to significantly more complex, 3-dimensional copying and replication of the provided images (book no. 13). The books in this series are designed to build upon the previous skills and knowledge gained in the earlier books: "the pupil is gradually led to place more dependence upon his own judgement." The exercises in book no. 6 consist primarily of two-dimensional floral designs, patterns and vases and pitchers. Book no. 10 has a combination of two-dimensional patterns and designs, but also has several three-dimensional floral images of leaves and bunches of fruit. Books 12 and 13 are almost exclusively three-dimensional floral patterns, designs and scenes. Instructional text accompanies the exercises, but there is space next to each exercise for copying. All of the front covers are identical to each other; a simple but decorative line border surrounds the text, with an Egyptian aten between the title and edition statements and the publisher. The books published by Potter, Ainsworth & Co. have a publisher's advertisement on the back cover which is entitled Standard Text Books. The lone book in this group published by A.S. Barnes & Co. bears the same advertisement on its back cover. The remaining books have a publisher's advertisement from the American Book Company on their back covers. On the insides of the front and back covers of each of these books is an explanation of the philosophy of the Bartholomew system and the goals and objectives for each book in the series. Only the first copy of book no. 6 (env. 5) has been completed by a previous owner. In this book, the first exercise has been colored in with crayons, and the rest have been completed in pencil. "Robert C. Vose" is written in ms. at the head of this book. Book Nos. 6 (env. 6), 10, 11, 12 (second copy, env. 10) and 13 have ".50" (price) written in ms., in pencil, in the upper left-hand corner of the front cover. Book No. 12 (env. 9) has "3-" (price) written in ms., in pencil, in the upper right-hand of the front cover.

Two drawing books entitled Bartholomew's National System of Industrial Drawing, Free Hand, No. 3 and No. 4, by William N. Bartholomew, published by Potter, Ainsworth & Company, New York and Chicago, 1874. This book is 16 pages in length and contains unnumbered exercises which range from one to three per page. The focus is on outline drawing: "the subjects selected as examples for practice are lines, angles, plane geometrical figures, ornamental forms, and outlines of familiar objects." Some of the exercises include: drinking goblets, a call bell, a candlestick holder and floral and leafy designs and patterns. All of the exercises have been completed by a previous owner. A decorative, horizontally-oriented frame surrounds the title on the front cover: patterns and ornamental designs fill the left-hand panel and a small, square image of an artist's easel and palette is in the upper right-hand corner of the frame. In the two bottom corners of the frame are places for the student to fill in his or her name and school and grade. On the inside of the front cover is an explanation of the Industrial Series itself, as well as some recommendations for materials to be used with this system. Three testimonials for the Bartholomew System from New York newspapers appear on the inside of the back cover. At the end of the testimonials is a list of the books that comprise the Bartholomew National System of Drawing. On the back cover of each is a publisher's advertisement for "Magill's French Series" of language books. Prior ownership: "V.B White" is written in ms., in pencil, in the upper right-hand corner of the front cover. "Viola B. White" is written in ms. in the lower left-hand corner of the front cover in the space labeled "Name"; "Haigh School" is written in ms. in the space labeled "School".

Two drawing books entitled Bartholomew's National System of Industrial Drawing, Mechanical, New Edition, No. 14 and No. 15, by William N. Bartholomew, published by American Book Company, New York, Cincinnati and Chicago, 1883. Each of these two books is 16 pages in length and contain numbered problems and exercises. Many of the problems and exercises focus on angles and lines for developing precision and accuracy. A sampling of some of the exercises covered are: the quatrefoil, division of lines into equal and proportional parts, construction of ornamental forms- design (all from book 14) and tangent lines and circles, circles inscribed and circumscribed, drawing of joints between stones in the elliptical arch and construction of plans for a building. Each of the problems and exercises are comprised of primarily instructional text with a small image for copying or use as a guide, and ample space in which to work. The front covers are the same with the exception of the book numbers in the upper left and right-hand corners. The title is surrounded by a simple but decorative frame; an Egyptian aten design is beneath the title and edition statement. The publisher information is below the aten. On the inside of the front covers are General Instructions for the use of each book. Both sides of the back covers contain an illustrated glossary, "Definition of terms" that is specific to each book. One drawing book entitled Bartholomew's National System of Industrial Drawing, Linear Perspective, New Edition, No. 18, by William N. Bartholomew, published by American Book Company, New York, Cincinnati and Chicago, ca. 1883. This 32-page book contains 133 lithograph illustrations. The first 4 pages include general remarks and directions for drawing perpendicular and parallel lines; the remaining pages contain numbered problems and unnumbered exercises. Each of the problems and exercises are comprised of instructional text, illustrations, and space for drawing. The majority of the exercises require the study and creation of parallel and perpendicular lines in relation to perspective using two and three-dimensional objects and designs. None of the exercises have been completed. The front cover is framed by a simple but decorative border that surrounds the title. An Egyptian aten is below the edition statement, and the publisher's statement is below that. The number of the book is in both the left and right-hand corners of the frame. The insides of the front and back covers are blank. On the back cover is a publisher's advertisement for "Popular Educational Series" of schoolbooks. Three drawing books, entitled Bartholomew's Drawing Book, New Series, Nos. 1, 2 and 5, by William N. Bartholomew, published by Woolworth, Ainsworth & Co., New York, copyright 1867, 1869, and 1870 respectively. The exercises within each of the three books is comprised of 12 half-sheet numbered exercises interleaved with full-page blank leaves for copying and additional original artwork. Each book progress in level of difficulty, and the books themselves increase in their levels of complexity. Book 1 begins with exercises in drawing horizontal and vertical lines, and continues with using those lines in various combinations and patterns to draw simple designs and decorative forms. All of the exercises have been completed. On the inside front cover are notes and instructions for the series. Book 1 is missing the back cover; instructions for lessons 4 and later are missing. Book 2 incorporates angled straight lines, introduces curved lines, and begins to explore leaf and plant forms. These exercises are considerably more complex than those found in Book 1. Some of the exercises have been completed; primarily those at the very beginning and the very end of the book. The inside front cover contains notes about materials, notes to the teacher, and instructions for lesson 1. The back cover is also lacking. The 12 numbered exercises in Book 5 are of plants and flowers. Some of the images include pansies, lily of the valley, and a rose. Most of the exercises have been copied, and there are additional original drawings, some dated by the artist. The inside of the front cover contains notes about the materials to be used for this book and general remarks. The inside of the back cover contains instructions for using and copying the 12 lessons within the book. The outside back cover is a publisher's advertisement for various items within the "Bartholomew's System of Drawing", including writing and drawing slates, drawing books, drawing cards and a teacher's guide. The paper wrapper added by (presumably) Alice Dodge contains pencil sketches and doodles. "Henry I.[?] Tubbs" is written in ms. on the front covers of Books 1 and 2 in the upper right-hand corner. "Alice Dodge, Sept. 28, 1871" is written in ms., in pencil, across the top cover of Book 5.

One drawing book entitled Bartholomew's National System of Industrial Drawing, Light, Shade & Shadow, New Edition, No. 17, by William N. Bartholomew, published by Potter, Ainsworth & Co., Boston, New York and Chicago, 1884. This 20-page book is illustrated with 39 lithograph illustrations. The first 2 pages contain an outline of this book and various rules that apply to drawing with light, shade and shadow. On the last page are several notes and tips pertaining to lights, shade, and shadow. The pages in between are devoted to the actual drawing exercises. Some of these include: a treescape, a bucket, ornamental designs in relief, floral designs, and various outdoor scenes. Each exercise, one per page, is comprised of textual instruction, an image or images, and ample space for drawing. None of the exercises have been completed. The front cover is decorated with a simple but decorative frame around the text, with an Egyptian aten below the edition statement, and the publisher's statement is below that. The book number is printed in both the upper left and right-hand corners. The insides of the front and back covers are blank.
