  One drawing book entitled The Prang Elementary Course in Art Instruction, No. 9, Seventh Year, First Half, by John S. Clark, Mary Dana Hicks, and Walter S. Perry, published by The Prang Educational Company, Boston, New York and Chicago, copyright 1898. Sixteen pages in length, this book is comprised of a wide variety of lithograph and photograph illustrations intended for study and copying. Some pages include space for copying of images. The front cover is framed by a decorative floral border. The insides of the front and back covers are blank. The back cover is a publisher's advertisement for "The Prang Elementary Course in Art Instruction", and discusses the philosophy and use of the course. As stated in this advertisement, the "three general subjects of Art, - Representation, Decoration and Construction,- are included in the scope of this Course." The focus of this Book 9 is on construction and its relation to composition. Some of the drawings, paintings, and images included in this volume are: "The First Step" by Millet; images of various trees; Shakespeare's house; Roman ornament and decoration and various Roman buildings. All of the exercises have been completed either in pencil or in pen and ink. Two additional original pieces of artwork have been mounted in: one is a pencil sketch of a basket of apples, the other is a pencil and watercolor work of a basket of fruit, with "Varney School" and "Harold C. Brown" written in ms. at the top. "Harold C. Brown" is written in ms., in ink, in the upper right-hand corner of the front cover.

  One scrapbook/collage created from The Prang Elementary Course in Art Instruction, Eastern Edition, published by The Prang Educational Company, Boston, copyright 1899. The scrapbook is 40 numbered pages in length, and scrapbook images have also been added to the insides of the covers, and to the back cover. The scrapbook images are cut from newspapers and magazines, and cover most but not all of the lithograph images of the instruction book. Most of the images are black and white, but there are also many chromolithograph images. The majority of the scrapbook images are of women. "Cora E. Nash" is stamped, in blue ink, on the front cover.

  Report of the Committee on Elementary School Art

  One pamphlet entitled Report of the Committee on Elementary School Art, Bess Eleanor Foster, Chairman, published by the Federated Council on Art Education, 1926. This report is 32 numbered pages in length; it is not illustrated. The first 7 pages include a list of related associations, a president's preface, a table of contents and an introduction. Several of the sections were written by named individuals, rather than the Council as a whole. There are ms. notes and annotations throughout. "Mabel Spofford, her book" is written in ms., in ink, on the bottom of the front cover.

  One drawing book entitled The Prang Elementary Course in Art Instruction, Eastern Edition, published by The Prang Educational Company, Boston, New York and Chicago, copyright 1899. The subtitle reads: Description, Specimen Illustrations from different grades and Opinions of leading Supervisors and Teachers. This 40-page book is primarily a collection of written testimonials about the Prang drawing system. Pages 3-6 are devoted to an outline and explanation of the system and its various levels and courses, and the remaining pages are excerpts from letters of praise from art teachers in the U.S., illustrated with both images from the Prang instructional drawing books and samples of artwork created using the Prang courses. The first two pages are composed of illustrations. The front cover is illustrated in the upper left-hand corner with a small, rectangular image of three daffodils. On the inside of the front cover begins "European Opinions in Regard to the Prang Course", which continues onto the inside back cover and the back cover. "2- BDF as is" (price) written in ms. in the upper right-hand corner of the first page.

  Young Folks' Drawing Book

  One manufacturer's advertisement/drawing book entitled Young Folks' Drawing Book, published by Billings, Clapp & Co., Boston, Massachusetts, ca. 1886. This advertisement/drawing book promotes both Nichol's Bark & Iron and encourages drawing practice. It is 16 unnumbered pages in length, and contains manufacturer's advertisements, testimonials (dated 1884-1886), and illustrations for copying. Each of the illustrations are printed against a numbered and lettered grid; a blank grid is printed on the facing page for copying. The front and back covers feature chromolithograph illustrations; on the front cover is an image of children drawing and playing, on the back, a young boy sits wearing a red tam and sash, with the tam bearing the name of "Nichol's Bark & Iron." None of the illustrations within the booklet have been copied. "Trautmann Bailey & Blampey, N.Y." (chromolithography) is printed at the bottom of the front cover.

  American Text Books of Art Education: Intermediate Course, Numbers One and Three

  Two drawing books entitled American Text Books of Art Education: Intermediate Course, Numbers One and Three, by Walter Smith, published by L. Prang & Company, Boston, 1875. Each book contains 20 numbered pages, and numbered exercises. Each exercise consists of very brief instructional text, an image, and space for copying. In Book One, many of the exercises focus on patterns, shapes and designs made from lines and shapes. Book Three focuses more on replication of forms, such as vases, drinking glasses and solids. Some of the exercises in the books have been completed by previous owners. The front covers of each bear the decorative symbol often used on the front covers of Smith instructional books. The inside front cover of Book One contains definitions of terms used throughout the book. The inside back cover gives general directions for the student and teacher, and lists the "principles of design illustrated" in the book. On the back cover is a descriptive outline of the Smith drawing course for the four levels of schools. The inside of the front cover of Book Three contains general use directions and illustrated definitions of "geometrical solids defined and described." On the inside of the back cover are: "Elementary principles to be taught and observed in model and object drawing: freehand." The back cover contains the same outline of the Smith system for the public schools as Book One. "Lutie Tompkins" is written in ms., in ink, along the top of the front cover of Book One. "McDonald" is written in ms., in ink, on the front cover of Book Three.
