One tracing/transferring kit entitled Kopeefun Magic Copy Paper Kit, manufactured by the Eastern Distribution Corp., Malden, Massachusetts, ca. 1940. The kit is sealed and has never been used, but appears to be comprised of a booklet of images for copying and transferring, and a set of "magic" paper. The front cover is illustrated with a color image of a family of four using a Kopeefun kit. Printed on the back cover is an alphabet for composing one's name or other words.

How to make Crepe Paper Flowers

One booklet entitled How to make Crepe Paper Flowers, published by Dennison Manufacturing Co., Framingham, Massachusetts, 1922. 32 pages in length, this instructional pamphlet provides both general and specific instructions for making numerous kinds of flowers from crepe paper. Each page highlights one kind of flower, and includes textual and visual (black and white) instructions. Laid in are several folded paper pattern sheets for use with the instructional pamphlet. The front and back covers are illustrated and in color; the front cover features a seated woman who is cutting a length of green crepe paper; the back cover features an orange vase of pink (presumably crepe paper) roses. Also on the front cover is the price of the pamphlet: "Price 10 [cents symbol]". The inside of the front cover is a manufacturer's advertisement for "Instrutions Books of 'Dennison Craft'", which lists and briefly describes the six titles in the series. The inside of the back cover advertises three books of holiday and party decorations issued by Dennison Manufacturing Co. "Mabel Spofford" is written in ms. at the top of the front cover.

Kopeefun Magic Copy Paper Kit

One tracing book entitled Kopeefun Magic Copy Paper Kit, manufactured by the Embree Manufacturing Company, Elizabeth, New Jersey, copyright 1940. The front cover bears a color illustration of a family of four using a Kopeefun kit; the title is below the image. The back cover contains promotional text for the drawing kit, and declares Kopeefun kits "Fun for Everyone from 5 to 55." "Pat. pending, Copyright 1940" is printed on the bottom of the back cover. The book contains 24 unnumbered leaves of images and partial images for copying by rubbing. The kit includes several sheets of "magic paper", which are placed over an image and then rubbed with a hard edged tool (such as a butter knife). The printed image is transferred to the magic paper, which, in turn, can be transferred to another sheet of paper or any surface. The first few pages of this book contain directions and suggestions for use, and the remaining leaves contain elements of cartoons and images. For example, there is a leaf of hairstyles, another of hats, another of mouths, etc. These can be combined to create a wide variety of images.

Flowers, A Paint Book

One painting book, ca. 1935, entitled Flowers, A Paint Book, illustrated by Pru Herric, published by Whitman Publishing Company, Racine, Wisconsin. This book is composed of 32 unnumbered pages of outline drawings of flowers. The front cover illustration is of flowers within a white trellis pattern. The back cover is the same pattern, but with different flowers. Each of the pages for coloring features a single type of flower that is identified by its common name; color suggestions are below the name of the flower. Some of the images have been colored in with chalk.

Magic Dots for Little Tots

One paper dot kit entitled Magic Dots for Little Tots, manufactured by the Milton Bradley Company, Springfield, Massachusetts, ca. 1910. The set is comprised of five cardboard cards, a packet of colored paper dots, and a set of printed instructions. The set is housed within a paperboard box; a chromolithograph image of a girl holding up a finished dot picture is on the top lid. On each of the 5 cards is printed an image with holes in the card; the images are to be "colored" by placing the colored dots within the holes which complete the image. The colored paper dots are removable, and the cards are reusable. The printed instructions accompanying this kit also serve as an order form for other sets; this set is No. 4482, Set 2. "Patented 1907, Patented in Canada 1910" is printed on the instruction sheet. Laid into the box is an empty sample box of cold relief and laxative pills.

Bartholomew's Drawing Book, Revised Edition, Nos. 4, 5, 7, 8

Four drawing books entitled Bartholomew's Drawing Book, Revised Edition, Nos. 4, 5, 7 and 8, by William N. Bartholomew, published by Woolworth, Ainsworth & Co., New York and Chicago, 1872-1873. Each of these 4 books is comprised of six numbered exercises, which are made up of lithograph illustrations and a blank facing page for copying. Only Book 5 includes significant instructional text for each of the exercises. Book 4 has very few lines of instructional text for some exercises; the other two have none. The levels of difficulty and complexity increase as the lessons progress. The front covers of these books are identical to each other with the exception, of course, of the book number in the lower-right quadrant. Each cover features the title in a decorative font, with decorative flourishes surrounding it. In the lower left-hand quadrant is an image of a gentleman's hand holding a pencil to paper. The book number and the words "revised edition" are in the lower right-hand quadrant of each, with the publisher's information at the bottom. Each book number also appears in the upper left-hand corner, above the title. The insides of the front covers contain general instructions and remarks for each specific book, with descriptions and notes for each of the lessons. The insides of the back covers contain publisher's advertisements; and the back covers also feature publisher's advertisements for various items within "Bartholomew's System to Drawing". The images in Book 4 are primarily outlines of flowers, vases and candlesticks, while the images in Books 7 and 8 are complex scenes of buildings and landscapes which involve shading, perspective and texture. Books 4 and 5 are covered by printed brown paper wrappers, each with a decorative frame surrounding the title "Drawing Book Cover, designed to accompany Bartholomew's System of Drawing to preserve and keep the book clean while in use.", and repeat the advertisements for Bartholomew's System of Drawing found on the back cover of all four books. Each of the four books has been completed by previous owners; some of the images, both the lithograph images and the copied images, have been additionally colored. "Harry S. Tubbs" is written in ms., in pencil and in ink, on the outside wrappers of Books 4 and 5; and is written on the front cover of Book 4. A black ink stamp of "Fred E. Howe" and "Keene, N.H." is stamped on the front covers of Books 7 and 8. "5-" (price) is written in ms., in pencil, on the first pages of Books 4 and 5.
